Review

Original and imaginative... glorious scientific allusions and illusions in a fast-paced and sparkling tale...a nuclear fusion of a novel..Move over H.G., A.B. Wells has written the time-travelling tale for the 21st century!

Tania Hershman, author of The White Road and Other Stories
and My Mother Was An Upright Piano: Fictions.

About the Author

What is a housewife to do when she becomes 42? Write a book about life, the universe and everything. A.B.Wells is the mother of four children age 11 and under, three of whom are that particularly alien species called boys. As Alison Wells her more literary writing has been shortlisted in the prestigious Bridport, Fish and Hennessy Awards and she's been published or is about to be in a wide variety of anthologies and e-zines, including the Higgs Boson Anthology by Year Zero, Metazen, The View from Here, Voices of Angels by Bridgehouse and National Flash Fiction day's Jawbreakers. She recently won the fiction category for the Big Book of Hope ebook with a flash fiction medley and has a litfic novel The Book of Remembered Possibilities on submission. She blogs for writing.ie in the guest blog: Random Acts of Optimism. One of the as yet unsolved mysteries of the universe is whether the B in A. B. Wells stands for barmy or brilliant.
In her former life she worked, among other things, as a clerk like Albert Einstein, as a technical writer (and a HR. Manager) and before that studied psychology and communications where, in the college library James Gleick's book Chaos fell on her head. Her ambitions include a desire to travel to see the Northern Lights and to really travel with Dr Who's David Tennant in a Tardis.

Meet Susan Strong, a bored-rigid stay-at-home mum, half- married to absentee husband Nigel, whose life is slowly disappearing beneath piles of unironed laundry, and soul-grinding daily rituals of washing, cleaning, school runs and relentless trips to the local supermarket. But Susan has a bigger problem. She is quite literally disappearing, and her slow fade from the fabric of existence has potentially catastrophic implications for the rest of humanity, the universe and everything in it.

But then one morning, a leather-clad, kilt-wearing, time traveller hunk called Dave plops out of her shower (don't ask) to declare himself her Fairly God Father. Fairly Dave, it would seem, has come from the furthest reaches of space to help her pull the threads of her life back together and save the universe from total destruction.

And so begins a fantastic interstellar road trip, that takes Susan and Dave on a series of wild and hilarious adventures, from weird and wonderful galaxies far far away to the memories, dreams and recollections of Susan's world-weary and fragile mind.

A.B. Wells has carefully crafted a superb and inventive novel that is a joy to read from beginning to end. The book fizzes with energy and original ideas, soaring through time and space at breakneck speed. For those hoping for a classic sci fi romp you won't be disappointed. Housewife with a Half Life is a masterful epic that playfully signposts the great and the good of the genre including Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dr Who, Bladerunner and Star Trek.

But Housewife is so much more than the parts of its sum. It is also a witty and acerbic satire on 21st Century womanhood. Think Bridget Jones on acid, or Dorothy- off to see the Wizard -about a divorce.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the two main characters and despite the sci fi setting found them very believable and engaging. The story line was great and loved the idea of travelling through time to find the bits of yourself you lost over the years! Very funny too. Would recommend it highly .

This is a light, entertaining Science Fiction read that also happens to be quite witty. Hope to see more from this author in the future.

Housewife with a Half-Life is a very funny book. If you take nothing else from it, you'll definitely be provided an entertaining read. However, I find it an unusual take on an explanation for a common plague of marriages: The drifting apart. Who wants to read about another marriage slowly slipping away? You do, in this book.

It isn't overt..the actual book doesn't spend a lot of time on it, to be honest. It's a very natural progression with a truly unique reasoning, however the book is spent on the housewife literally trying to find herself. This will have a permanent home on my device so that I may read it whenever and wherever the whim takes me. I have a feeling it'll be frequently.
