About the author

“My name is Michael. I can hop. Do you want to see me hop?” That’s how I introduced myself to strangers at the supermarket when I was three. Not much has changed. Here’s the formal bio (best bits at the end).
Michael Bungay Stanier is at the forefront of shaping how organizations see coaching as an essential leadership competency. His book The Coaching Habit is the best-selling coaching book of this century, with over a million copies sold. In 2019, he was named the #1 thought leader in coaching, and he has spoken on coaching from Brené Brown's podcast to the TEDx stage.
Michael founded Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that helps organizations transform from advice-driven to curiosity-led. He currently leads MBS.works, a place where people find the clarity, confidence and community to be a force for change.
En route to today—and these are essential parts of his origin story—Michael knocked himself unconscious as a labourer by hitting himself in the head with a shovel; mastered stagecraft at law school by appearing in a skit called Synchronized Nude Male Modelling; and wrote (and was paid for) a Harlequin Romance-esque story involving a misdelivered letter … and called The Male Delivery. He was a Rhodes Scholar.

First of all, the author's writing style is witty and engaging, and I found myself laughing out loud at the hilarious analogies and anecdotes. For example, he compares starting a new project to jumping into a cold pool (you just have to dive in and get used to the chill), and he tells the story of a chicken who wanted to fly (but was told it couldn't, so it built a plane instead).
But don't let the humor fool you, "How to Begin" is also packed with practical advice and actionable steps for getting started on any project. The author provides a framework for identifying your "big rocks" (i.e. the most important things you need to do) and offers strategies for overcoming procrastination and self-doubt. He also stresses the importance of taking small, consistent steps towards your goals, rather than trying to do everything at once.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the section on "beginner's mind," which encourages readers to approach new challenges with curiosity and openness. This concept resonated with me and has already helped me approach my work with a fresh perspective.
But perhaps the best thing about "How to Begin" is that it's not just a "self-help" book. The author encourages readers to share the book with others, and provides sample scripts for leading a "beginning" conversation with a friend or colleague. I've already recommended the book to several people in my life and have enjoyed discussing the concepts with them.
In short, "How to Begin" is a fantastic read for anyone looking to take the first step towards greatness. It's funny, practical, and will give you the kick in the pants you need to start chasing your dreams. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and press the "buy" button already!
It's an invitation to discover your best self by doing hard, meaningful work that matters. It's challenging, inspiring, inviting, and it's worked for me as I've tackled some of the hardest work of my life.
I can make anything more complex than it needs to be. I've spent many hours thinking about how I should spend my time and how I'd like to show up. Especially at the start of a new year! I've tried many tools (goal planners!), books, and courses. This book moved me to action and helped me focus my overthinking. It's a beautifully intuitive and useful process.
Two other things that I really appreciated in this book. First, the author's humility in sharing things he is working through and his own struggles. I value that much more and found it helpful when I hit tough moments. Second, I like the unconventional design and structure. It made reading a more beautiful experience and makes it feel more like a playbook than a regular non-fiction book.
Update 7/10/2022: I continue to lean on this process. Here are some incremental successes I’ve realized. As a result of my first worthy goal, I had the opportunity to craft a new role at work for myself - and I’ve been able to make it one that draws out the best of me. It also came with a nice pay raise, which helps. I’ve stepped up to greater challenges and my own intuition, which has opened additional doors personally and professionally. I feel like I’m carving away at the marble and continuously revealing myself and I’m so very grateful to Michael and the MBS Team (hey there, Ainsley!).
Last thing. There’s a community of people who are taking the process in this book and commuting to doing meaningful work. It’s the first such thing I have signed up for and it has been far more than worth it.
