Can't go wrong with Shepherd Paine's book!

This book takes the usual model builder into the world of putting the scale model they just completed and putting it into the larger context of the world the full size version occupies or occupied in history.
I find the step by step photo and word guides for building scenery and modding the model for hyperrealism adds greatly to the hobby.
Paine's own work is artistry that can be appreciated by everyone.
If the last diorama you made was in second grade this book takes all the fear out of taking your modelmaking to a new level.
To tell you how great a guide this is, even my wife approves of this new facet to my hobby!

The defacto bible on making Military Dioramas

Simply one of the best books out there on how to make military dioramas. This book has a generous 144 pages with lots of pictures of finely made military dioramas. The sub title for this book is "Aircraft, Armor, Ships, and Figure Models" and it covers all those aspects. But, it also covers a lot of the art of making dioramas from coming up with the ideas and how to design the diorama in a way that makes sense. It also covers a lot of the territory that diorama makers cross into from Weathering effects to wiring to casting your own miniatures.
Great book, if you want to make military dioramas this one has to be in your collection. You will refer to it time and time again. And even if you make dioramas that are not military based you will get a lot of great tips and techniques from this book.

The book details how to construct dioramas. No problems whatsoever on that end. Very useful tips are introduced and pretty detailed. Unfortunately, this new edition lacks much of any significant new information (even editing) as compared to the previous edition - to boot, most of the older edition copies can be purchased at a much reduced rate as compared to this one. In either event, if you need to find out how to make useful and realistic dioramas for your plastic models, this book is worth the money either way.

This is the book to have if you are looking to solve your construction problems. There are many examples on -how to-,and it deals with many aspects of dioramas, like the construction of the base, the planning and the painting of models, a lot of information in a relatively short book, but that's because it's only the truly important aspects of diorama building.

It is a welcome addition to any modeler's library who wishes to attempt making dioramas.
WARNING!! You will be constantly asking "How did he make it so 'life-like'?"
and be "green with envy" when you see the full color photo's of his work.
But fear-not; he explains how he did it and how you can too.

I bought the first edition as a twelve year old when it came out back in 1980. It revolutionised my approach to modelling and I give Shep Payne due credit for encouraging me to work at my modelling skills - so much so that I was able to go on and win medals at the Model Engineer Exhibition in the succeeding years.

Years later - as my boys are approaching the same age - I have revisited this book via the second edition (although I still have the original). I am glad to say that it has been revitalised with many more colour photos, better illustrations and additional modelling projects.

Although some might appear a little dated in the modern age it is still a classic handbook for youngsters and adults alike who want to improve their techniques. It tells you everything you want to know without patronising the reader.

Still thoroughly recommended!
