About the Author

Manning Marable was a professor of public affairs, history and African-American Studies at Columbia University. Marable authored fifteen books including Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for History.

Leith Mullings is a distinguished professor of anthropology at the Graduate Center CUNY. She is an anthropologist, author, lecturer, and educator. She served as president of the American Anthropological Association from 2011 to 2013. Much of her work focuses on the analysis of inequality and she has been involved in research projects in Africa, the United States, and Latin America. Through the lens of feminist and critical race theory, she has analyzed a variety of topics including kinship, representation, gentrification, health disparities, and social movements. Mullings has a strong commitment to producing scholarship that addresses timely social issues, is undertaken in collaboration with research subjects, and seeks to empower communities through knowledge.

Though originally written in 1983, this book sounds as if if could've been written yesterday (perhaps with the substitution of a few names & updating a few figures). For instance, "We cannot create a revolution in the United States if we mistakenly view the enemy as Reagan [substitute Trump] alone, or all males, or all white people, rather than the State." And the book was written at the beginning of the second wave of mass incarceration fueled by the drug war. As Marable says "What many Blacks perceive as a 'white conspiracy,' in the words of Jesse Jackson, is in reality the conjuncture of racist ideological hegemony in the U.S., an acceleration of the use of physical coercion and terrorism against Blacks by both the coercive apparatuses of the state (e.g., the police) and by paramilitary racist groups (the Ku Klux Klan, and many others), and the absence of a powerful, democratic and progressive movement by Blacks which challenges racism in the streets as well as in the courts." This book is an indispensable additional to any anti-racist's library!
