This is not a good book. More and better information available at VMware's site. Waste of energy even to write this review since it's costing me time.

What a waste! I wanted a good book to give me some basic knowledge for installing ESX servers. In the middle of chapter 2, somebody dropped the ball. They printed the same directions 17 times in a row after each screen shot of the network setup. This is clearly wrong and a grave lack of attention to detail. People need to learn that spell checking alone is not a substitute for good ol' proof reading. What a disappointment. I want my money back. I'd give a review without any stars if I could.

I picked this up at my local library, so luckily I didn't spend any money to read it. I am a network/system administrator, so in all fairness this book wasn't written for me as is mentioned on the cover. The first half of the book covers installing ESX server, but it is basically a bunch of screen shots with a little bit of text explaining each screen shot. One chapter even went as far as using the same block of "go to the next step" text for each caption which made that chapter completely worthless. If you are looking at picking up this book to install ESX, save your self money and trouble and just download the docs off VMware's website. You will seriously get more out of reading the install documents.

The second half covers a bit of scripting and other odds and ends, but again most of this information can be found on VMware's website.

In the end, the book is nothing more than the author's screenshots of his installation of ESX server with a more little content. Save your self the money and get all of this information for free off the web.

Much of the information in the first part of the book deals with the installs, including Virtual Centre, and general configuration, but is presented much better that any of the VMware user guides. The latter part of the book deals mainly with programming, and other SDK features, which may not be of use to the majority of admins, at least not in the early stages of use. I wanted a book that dealt with the installs in a very clear format, and this books provides that. It is not the Advanced Technical Guide, but that'll come elsewhere. It does provide some basic information on templates and P2V.
