From the Back Cover
Over the last twenty-five years, thousands of couples have turned to the Shettles method for choosing the sex of their babies. And thousands have been blessed with the boy or girl they hoped for. In fact, the properly applied Shettles method gives couples at least a 75 percent chance of having a child of the desired sex. Some researchers have reported success rates up to 90 percent! Many sex selection methods have come and gone, but the Shettles method - constantly under scrutiny and continually refined - has endured. In this newly revised edition, Dr. Shettles weighs the pros and cons of the more sophisticated clinical tests, presents information on the new ovulation-timing technologies, and gives recommendations for how these developments can help achieve even better results when applied to the simple, at-home Shettles method - still the best way to conceive the boy or girl you always wanted.

My wife also was on a high calorie, protein and potassium diet for two months prior and also took a dose of cough syrup daily for two weeks prior to when we attempted to create an alkaline environment in her body. I also did what I had to do by abstaining for days prior and wearing boxer shorts for two months.
Whether it is truly 50-50 as skeptics believe or not, I can't say, but we followed the method and got our desired result. Also looking back at all of the factors that went into conceiving our daughter they aligned with the Shettles method for a girl to a T.
If you're looking to sway your chances of having a particular gender I would highly recommend this book / method. Even if it's only a few percentage points either way it's not that difficult to try and you may get exactly what you're looking for.
Update. Am having a Girl! I think this really worked for me. We followed the book all the way. And now we have our first baby girl
I already had a girl so me and my husband wanted to try for a boy. I'm going to give Mr. Shettles the credit and going to say it definitely worked for us! It doesn't hurt to try it out!
This book was good and informationa...l but I found myself only skimming the book. A lot of the info was not just in regards to Shettles method but also about previous thoughts on sex selection, which I just did not care for. Plus, it gave background about other researcher's theories, which I also didnt find interesting because their success rate was only 56% percent (just 6% more than natural conception without sex selection) versus 75-80% for Shettles method. I found myself reading from page 57-175 and only still skimming through that information.
Part of the reason for my skimming of the book is because I first read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" (10th edition) which already taught me how to chart my cycle... and to my surprise, even had a whole chapter about the Shettles method! The Taking Charge book actually told me everything I needed to know about the Shettles method - his book just gave me a little more background as to WHY those things were believed to be true.
This book teaches us to first chart our cycles to learn about when we ovulate. For a boy, you want to have sex as close to ovulation as possible, wheras for conceiving a girl you want to have sex 3-4 days before ovulation. Reason for this is because the male sperm swim quicker and are smaller and do not withstand as much as the female sperm does. Thus, by having sex further from ovulation when trying for a girl, the girl sperm would have a change to still fertilize the egg since it withstands much more than the male sperm would.
I am giving this book a 4-star review because the sex selection method started with the information here. The information behind Shettles method is truly interesting; however I do believe "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" is a much better book that encompases so much more that us women need to know about conception. But do what I did - buy each book used - and read both. No need to spend more buying the most recent edition - the information is the same.
