I love that this book has tons of photos and illustrations, as well. That makes everything so much easier to figure out! How to Cook offers up a variety of recipes that are easy enough for novice cooks, yet go beyond the 'ants on a log' recipes that kids' cookbooks have as a staple. Easy and fast recipes like soups, salads(including dressings), quesadillas, and pancakes were in the first section. Larger entrée-style recipes in the second section include jambalaya, some curries, several pasta dishes, fish, chicken, and a really nice section on barbequing meats, veg, and even fruit! The sweet section has recipes that might sound hard, but the book shows that it can be really easy, with instructions for meringue, profiteroles, mousse, ice cream, and more. Bake-off gives you recipes for rolls and empanadas, as well as cake, brownies, muffins, and cookies-- though I will say that the macaroon recipe looked weird to me. I was really glad that they left the techniques and tips section for last. With teens, you never know what their current skill level is, and who is willing to waste their time paging past tons of stuff they already know? This way, readers are directed in the recipe to look at the back of the book for any skills they may need. Great job!

I GOT THIS BOOK FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER THAT IS BEGINNING TO COOK. She loves it and is excited to use it for making meals to serve the family!
The book was in excellent conditions even though it is an older book. It is set up from scarch recipes that is very good for beginners to learn and gain confidence in the wonderful world of cooking!

The variety in recipes is great but I will be guiding my teen cousin to the internet for more thorough instructions and photos. I believe the Amer Heart Assoc. or the Pioneer Woman are better for beginners...her recipes may be slightly more complex but she explains each step and has images of real food at each step.
Also, I didn't realize 'used' in this case meant "an old library book." Most of the books I've gotten from Amazon were used but pretty. This ones not awful but it's not pretty. Not a huge deal though- the lack of real images is mostly my issue.

Very nice cookbook, not just for kids. It is good for parents to work with kids. My son loves the book, found in school library and decided that he wants his own copy.
