Required reading for all U.S. politicians and government officials, as well as every patriotic U.S. citizen

As an astute observer and a socialist apostate who lived in the heart of Western Europe throughout WWII and the ensuing Cold War, Jean-Francois Revel was uniquely qualified to assess European political developments during the Cold War. His brilliant book HOW DEMOCRACIES PERISH – first published in 1983 – is must reading for any who wonder why the U.S. has been repeatedly called upon to rescue Europe from its own manifold foibles. With biting sarcasm that belies his underlying contempt for European sociocommunists in general and Western European politicians in particular (“Our diplomats once more found a way to act against our honor and our interests.”), Revel lays bare their collective hypocrisies, incompetence and political impotence in trying to reconcile their love affair with sociocommunism and their fear of soviet domination. He chronicles how time after time Western European so-called “statesmen” were cowered and duped by the soviets into acting against their own interests. Along the way, he also notes how the cupidity of international financial and corporate interests undermined U.S. efforts to curtail soviet expansionism, and he leaves no doubt that the Cold War was won by the U.S. in spite of its so-called “European allies.” Submerged as he was in European impotence and sociocommunist group think and not anticipating the emergence of a U.S. resurgence during the Reagan administration, Revel failed to anticipate the sudden collapse of the former Soviet Union, but his indictments of sociocommunism are as valid today as they were when he first made them. With Communist China now an even greater threat to international peace and stability than the Soviet Union ever was, Revel’s insights make it indelibly clear that the U.S. is alone in its fight against international communist expansionism and certainly cannot depend on its so-called “allies.” Consequently, HOW DEMOCRACIES PERISH should be required reading for all U.S. politicians and government officials, as well as every patriotic U.S. citizen.

Revel is one of those thinkers that once you read him your either rave about him or are driven crazy by him depending on how ideologically reified you are. Even now decades after he wrote the book he is spot on, on the failure of the Left to recognize its own intellectual Achilles heel, the inability to accept objective reality and their own inherent cognitive bias.

Sometimes it's important to read a bright, recently-"dated" book, to give us cutting edge perspective on our evolving selves. Jean Francois Revel's book meets that challenge.

Jean-Francois Revel is The most astute observer of the West’s Political self flagellation and instinctive genuflecting to the communists in print. You won’t find anything as accurate written by an ethnocentric American. He is an excellent thinker and writer. Reminds me of 19th century writers who knew how to craft their thoughts into masterpieces of the English language - and with finely nuanced and humorous sarcasm.

Dr Revel has written several books about the slide of socialism to despotism. His work is particularly interesting because he is a committed member of the political left. Dr Revel explores the history of socialist parties, socialist activists and the outcome of their efforts as well as their unwillingness to condemn even the obvious evils of any system which describes itself as socialist. He argues that the left must figure out how to sustain the productivity of capitalism while ensuring and developing social programs. His books are compelling.

This book is an older examination of the failures of democracies. In this day, its topic is timely and provocative.

Revel is an author that too few people know...worth the read, somewhat scary in its prophesy but I really believe this should be on a best seller list!
