About the Author

Joshua Hoyt has been studying psychology for five years and is currently working as a School Psychologist. He has four beautiful children and an amazing wife who continually supports him through all of his endeavors. Writing became a passion for Joshua four years ago as he began writing his first young adult novel. In an effort to help other writers create more in-depth characters he wrote "How To Diagnose Your Character" which is based off of his blog by the same title. Gaming is also a large part of Joshua's life and he takes a lot of his content and ideas from the many hours of playing role playing games. Joshua also enjoys hiking, camping and being with his family as much as possible.

This book is absolutely fantastic for helping with fictional character development. This book is very concise and makes a lot of psychology concepts accessible and shares the concepts in a way that makes them useful in character development. Introduces a variety of psychology theories and cites where it comes from -- very helpful. Highly recommended.

As someone who loves to write, I found this book to be extremely useful. I have no problem coming up with interesting plots but my characters are often dull, 2D, and unrealistic. This book taught me how to look at my characters and develop them in a manner that will make them more human, or inhuman as necessary. I also found that this book gave plenty of suggestions for plot points regarding character development. So, if you are a fledgling author who would like to have more information on character building, this book is worth the investment.

I am a school psychologist and I found this a very interesting book; I never knew so much psychology was involved when creating a character. This book brought light to how much writers need to know about human behavior and the way the brain works in order for the readers or watchers to connect with the characters. It brought light to the fact that writers and psychologists actually have a lot in common, and that when the thoughts of a writer are shared with the thoughts of a psychologist, a charcater can be made that may change my life; a character that may open up a whole new side to my personality that I never knew before; a character that might bring a whole new love into my life. I higly suggest this book to writers who want to establish better character creating skills, and I also suggest this book to those who are interested in learning more about personality and character in general. This book helped me to understand my character/personality better and how that allows me to connect with other fictional characters, which in turn helps me realize more and more about who I am.

Very interesting psychology book! Really made me think more about my characters actions and where they could stem from. If you're a writer and want to go deep with your characters, this book is definitely worth reading.

This is a must have for screenwriters. The insights you'll gain into what makes characters tic is invaluable. And for 99 cents on Kindle, you can't go wrong!

The writer presents several psychological theories on what makes people behave. You can pick the one that fits your temperament the best, and use that. Or you can use combinations of them, one for one character, a different one for someone else. It's your call. The point is, you'll learn new tools by which to create characters.

An excellent overview of psychology and how to use it to develop believable characters. This book helped me put into words what I was trying to say about some of my more complex characters, and develop some of the ones I was having trouble diagnosing. I will be recommending this book to other writers. Thanks, Mr. Hoyt!
