More Great Reads for fans of How Do Dinosaurs Discover a joyful reminder of the ways that every child is unique and special, from the New York Times bestseller, Peter H. Reynolds. In the tradition of books like Oh, the Places You’ll Go! comes a wholly original celebration of individuality. Pig is a pug that has everything he could ever want yet refuses to share with his friend Trevor. Pig soon learns that being greedy has its consequences. Join Pig as he learns the lesson of sharing with others. There was an old lady who swallowed a truck. I don’t know why she swallowed a truck. You won’t believe why the Old Lady swallowed a truck, a tire, a chain, some wood, some metal, some tools, and some screws! This laugh-out-loud companion to The Very Impatient Caterpillar and The Little Butterfly That Could is perfect for bedtime! Readers will laugh as they learn to find their inner calm and settle for sleep—even when they wake in the night. Three children meet Stillwater, a giant panda who tells amazing tales, when he shows up in their backyard. With graceful art and simple stories, Jon J Muth presents three ancient Zen tales to Addy, Michael, and Karl. A soft plush lion finger puppet pokes through to become a character on every spread in this interactive board book. With sweet, bright illustrations, this book will have readers of all ages entertained all day long.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—A new cast of brightly colored dinosaurs appears in this charming back-to-school story. The text's easy rhyme and rhythm will be familiar to those who have read other books in this series, and Teague's charismatic and naughty dinosaurs will continue to delight readers with their antics and exuberance. The illustration accompanying "DOES A DINOSAUR YELL?" is sure to elicit smiles as an excited Herrerasaurus leaps out of his chair proudly holding up a newly lost tooth. His teacher looks annoyed, but his classmates all turn toward him with their own gap-toothed grins. The 10 dinosaurs that appear are identified on the endpapers where each is hard at work or play. Stygimoloch using one arm to prop up his raised hand as he blurts out is also likely to draw a smile from veteran teachers. A fun read-aloud for the first day of school.—Neala Arnold, St. Francis Elementary School, MN

From Booklist

This eighth entry (counting the two board books) in the Yolen/Teague How Do Dinosaurs series features a cast of 10 brightly colored dinosaurs that manage to dominate the double-page spreads without overwhelming them. Questions arise when the dinos are put in common school-day situations. Would dinosaurs walk to school or carpool? Would they stomp and make a fuss on the bus? Would they roughhouse and punch and disrupt the class by yelling or fidgeting with their tails in the air? Of course not. Before they leap out the door at the end of the school day, readers will realize that these dinosaurs are helpful, tidy, and protective, "growling at the bullies till the bullying ends." Yolen's short, rhyming text and Teague's irresistible, cavorting dinosaurs perfectly convey how dinosaurs could behave in school, large and powerful though they may be. Fans of the other titles in the series will welcome this new lesson on how to behave properly yet manage to remain a true dinosaur. Randall Enos

My 18 month old son loves this book. I'm not sure why, except that it has school buses in it. It doesn't seem like he would relate to most of it. And it seems that a school-aged kid who is old enough to need or understand the lessons about sitting still in class, not interrupting, not pushing on the playground, etc. isn't going to be fooled by putting that advice into a story.

Also, in contrast to the other books in the series, which are more balanced in what not to do and what you should do instead, this one is 90% negative. I'm not sure I will read it to my little boy as much as the others (if he will let me get away with that), because not only does it keep on with negative after negative, it is talking about SCHOOL in a negative way. It makes it seem as though school is a place where you can't do all sorts of things and there are only limited things you CAN do. I'm not sure why the book turned out this way, if there were too many good ideas for rhyming things you shouldn't do, or not enough of the right words to make more shoulds at the end.

In spite of all this, the illustrations are great and the rhyming is clever, as always. I'm not sure what "chalk talk" in the classroom is, but hopefully that is something the kids will know. Cute book - kids always love books about school. And I think my son probably likes this one because he loves the others in the series so much!

Another favourite of my kiddos, and mine.
It is impossible not to love the idea, the rhymes and the detail of the drawings. Naughty and polite children pictured as dinosaurs. Pretty accurate!

Not too sure how I feel about this book. First half of the book shows the 'don't' behavior that supposed to demonstrate to the reader that this type of behaviors are bad. Then proceed on the second half of the book that shows all the proper behaviors. My boy seems to love the book and the dinosaurs so much that he would just do everything that are shown on the book.

It is a fun book. Parents should just take some caution of how you would want to teach your children about the improper behaviors in the book.

Love this picture book!

It takes the child through the entire day at school in a light-hearted and reassuring way.

If your child is about to start school and you're both scared about it, get this book to comfort and reassure you both.

I bought this for my lil nephew who is starting primary school in September and he loves dinosaurs, so I reckon he'll love this book... maybe have a read of the first page with the names of all of the dinosaurs to make sure you can pronounce them all before you share it with your child though... I can only pronounce the Diplodocus dinosaur lol Maybe you could encourage your child to teach you how to pronounce each of them to send their self-confidence soaring?

A definite must-read for all those children who are starting Reception or Year 1 to help them feel more at ease on their first day!
