How Do I Do That In InDesign? Paperback – December 10, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by InDesign? You just want to find what you need so you can move forward with your work. You're not alone. How Do I Do That Thing in InDesign? is here to answer your questions quickly and clearly.
Adobe InDesign is the clear software of choice for designers in desktop publishing and typesetting. With it, designers create professional, eye-catching posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books, and ebooks. But because it has so much power and depth, sometimes the things you need are…well…kinda hidden or not really obvious.
There will be a lot of times when you need to get something done in InDesign, but you have no idea where Adobe hid that feature, or what the “secret handshake” is to do that thing you need now so you can get back to working. That’s why this book was created: to get you to the technique, the shortcut, or exactly the right setting, right now.
Here's how it works: When you need to know how to do a particular thing, you turn to the chapter where it would be found, find the thing you need to do (it’s easy—each page covers just one single topic), and designer and author Dave Clayton tells you exactly how to do it just like he was sitting there beside you, using the same casual style as if he were telling a friend. That way, you get back to working in InDesign fast.
This isn’t a book of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed multi-step concepts. This is a book on which button to click, which setting to use, and exactly how and when to use it, so you’re never “stuck” in InDesign again. This will be your “go to” book that sits within reach any time you’re working in InDesign, and you are going to love having this type of help right at your fingertips.

This is just like having a seasoned senior designer sitting at your elbow. No BS. No Google rabbit holes when you just need to refresh yourself about Tables. No long articles about the "10 Best Features You Never Knew About" when you have a question. You open the book, check the Table of Contents, and boom!
I've been using InDesign intermittently since it came out. As the years have worn on, I find myself using it solely for complex, multipage documents … of which I design less and less as I get older. Now, I spend so much time in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and After Effects, that InDesign has become that fifth wheel in my workflow.
I don't remember all the shortcuts anymore. I don't vividly recall all the functions beyond typesetting. I forget how to do basic things (like insert an Excel file into a table … pg 201) in the long absence between sessions.
Dave's book is an awesome pocket guide. I can quickly jog this old memory and keep trucking without spending a ton of time on Google when I'm under a deadline.
Newbies or part-time InDesigners, I can thoroughly recommend this book. I'm definitely hoping for a Part II.
Snatch it up!
If I had published this book, I would have made an effort to make the design work, esp. for computer text books. Peachpit Press has published a lot of computer textbooks for the Mac, and they're all superb examples of how to design this kind of reference book. But Rocky Nook, unfortunately, has designed a book that wastes space with too many dark screenshots that, when printed small, are unreadable.
My recommendation to Rocky Nook: Pick up a half dozen Peachpit Press books by Robin Williams and study them, and then redesign this hot mess.
The author is obviously an expert and his writing is also excellent, but the teaching effect is greatly diminished by a graphic design that hinders, not helps, the text.
Dave has an easy way of explaining things to us. So thankful to have all these in one place. WAHOOOOOOO thank you so much for making an awesome book!
