From Dr. Nicole LePera, creator of "the holistic psychologist"—the online phenomenon with more than two million Instagram followers—comes a revolutionary approach to healing that harnesses the power of the self to produce lasting change.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual wellness that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she’d learned with others—and soon “The Holistic Psychologist” was born.

Now, Dr. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.

In How to Do the Work, Dr. LePera offers readers the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental wellness and self-care.

10 stars out of 5 (5 stars won't cut it for me)!!!I just received this book earlier today and was so ecstatic that I read it immediately. Although I am not halfway through this book, what I have read has resonated with me so far. However, it still led me to leave this review because I wanted to share MY experience with Dr. Nicole’s teachings hoping that maybe you, too, will find healing the way I did.---Dr. Nicole has helped me open my eyes and see that I wasn’t this big ego, insecure, clingy, anxious kind of person. No, I was more than just that. I was, in fact, someone who had unresolved trauma. No surprise to me because I was assaulted as a child and had lived through that my whole life. I went to therapy too, but I just stopped because I did not resonate with them. However, here is what I learned about myself, well, about who I was.I learned that I come from codependency, anxiety, PPD, childhood trauma, and generational trauma. While I was well aware of anxiety, PPD, and childhood trauma, I was never aware that I, too, was codependent and experienced generational trauma. I was someone subconsciously crying for help; my inner child needed the nurturing it never got. I also learned that I subconsciously mirrored my own mother’s struggle, dating men after men; this makes sense because I was codependent. A big part of this was because my brain was so used to making this chemical “cocktail” (Dr. Nicole quotes), I was subconsciously unaware I was making such irrational reactions/behaviors. (This is where Dr. Nicole’s book comes in handy; to re-parent ourselves by unlearning negative habits/behaviors and replacing them with positive ones.)Dr. Nicole helped me recognize my triggers, negative thought patterns/behaviors, and my addictions that included “emotional addiction.” Moreover, her teachings enabled me to validate my emotions/feelings, set boundaries for myself and others, honoring myself, being more present for my children, etc. (I would continue, but the list would be too long). It also led me to take care of myself by journaling, caring for the gut-brain axis, practicing mindfulness meditation, and exercising.I’m not saying that her teachings “healed” all of me because frankly, I think I’ll be working on myself until I die. She just helped me to recognize what has always been in there, hiding. For me, that’s okay because the one thing I gained from her teachings is the one thing we lack in this world – self-awareness.-*If you are still unsure about purchasing this book, do these things first. You can look at her videos via YouTube (I learned that I was not “in love” but rather “in trauma”) or her IG page. See if any of her teachings resonate with you, and if they do, then I am certain you, too, would benefit from this book. But if not, well, then I wish you the best in your healing journey. As much as I want her teachings to heal everyone, I am also aware that her teachings may not align or resonate with others, and that is okay too.*Just a reminder, if you do get this book, or if you’re in the journey of healing, remind yourself that not only does this journey require commitment, it also requires RE-COMMITMENT. There will be times where you will feel defeated, and that’s okay; what matters is getting back up and continuing. You got this! “I see you. I am with you!”

This manual for living an authentic, fulfilled, and peaceful life provides invaluable insights and actionable steps for the reader to become aware of their authentic self and make strides towards living a life full of interdependence, connections, love, and peace. Dr. LePera’s conversational style of writing breaks down and organizes the journey of becoming self-aware and healing childhood traumas in a manner that most can understand and relate to. I loved this book so much that I ordered two copies for my two adult children. As someone who reads a lot about philosophy, consciousness, and spirituality, I found that Dr. LePera expertly describes difficult to understand topics in a voice that makes the concepts easier to grasp while providing actionable steps for the reader to embark on their own journey. I applaud Dr. LePera for her unique insights and for her courage in putting this book together. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I was hesitant in providing a review but this book truly is a gem, in the sense that it will certainly change the field of mental health for the better. Curious to follow Dr Nicole LePera and her work, I couldn’t help but feel connected but also highly skeptical. As a clinically and research trained Psychologist, the deep rooted skepticism of new theories is inevitable: “but this isn’t what we were taught exactly” and “well how do we change the way conceptualize trauma from what we’ve learned and is it evidenced based?” and many other questions arose. Even my colleagues rolled their eyes when I mentioned it and repeated phrases such as “it’s just a fad, it strays from traditional practices.” And those responses...only lured me deeper into wanting to better understanding Nicole’s perspective.

I bought the book. I began reading and felt who I am personally, while setting aside who I am professionally, naturally gravitate and feel seen within the content in this book. Nicole does a profoundly eloquent job in highlighting what many of us professionals struggle to conjure up for our patients. She bravely redefines Trauma and challenges old ideas to incorporate new thought in relation to current times. Trauma is real, it remains poorly understood and many people experience it. Nicole offers a new lens to conceptualize.

Transparency is a key component of being a good therapist. For me, this book allowed me to reconnect with my own theories of trauma, Core beliefs, self-regulation, and attachment. It’s rare for doctoral programs to redirect self-conceptualization to the doctoral trainee. “Becoming self-aware” is not in their curriculum. It’s “focus on the patient, follow traditional theories, be ethical etc.” but never once do they look to the student and ask “how self-aware are you in your own trauma and how do you think this will impact your work as a therapist?” And I resonated with Nicole’s take on being a doctoral student and feeling lost in the overachieving, performance driven and “follow the protocol” energy of therapist. And it’s tiring so much so that we are bound to lose ourselves before we have a chance to ever find it- let alone- help to find themselves too.

Nicole writes this book for many kinds of readers which is beyond helpful and powerful. More people can finally understand what’s going on with feeling disconnected from the self and learn ways to feel more connected. I think I am able to finally view my own vulnerabilities more clearly and allow myself to cultivate them into strengths that will translate into better helping my patients.

This book will undoubtedly be a staple in the way I conceptualize who I am both personally and professionally. Thank you LePera. You’re creating a new wave of thought, a powerful way of treating the self, and redefining what it means to heal. And to my colleagues, it’s not a fad, just tap in and see for yourself.

It is a very useful book to have in your library. I first discovered it at my local library and found myself renewing and re-checking it out. I ended up buying it as I felt it was one of those books that would be useful to have handy when you need it. I highly recommend reading this book while also working with a therapist. I thought I could use this book instead of using a therapist and it definitely open the floodgates. You learn a lot about how your brain processes traumas and experiences and how we hold it in the body and create coping strategies. It’s incredibly informative and well written so anyone can understand the physiology and biology. The downside is, once you learn it and open up that world, it can be difficult to process on your own. It was after reading this, I sought out talk therapy and it helped me process all the things that came up while reading the book. Definitely a great introduction to the world of therapy and the beginnings of doing the work needed to overcome trauma, depression, and/or working on relationships. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises (the ‘doing the work’ part) which are very useful and why I wanted it in my library. My issue was, it was physically and emotionally painful when working on it which is why I decided to work with a therapist. Hope this helps and hope everyone gets the right help they need.

I wholeheartedly believe this book was presented to me from my higher power. I literally stumbled across it, read the reviews and felt compelled to read it. It is truly life changing as others have said. And it came at the perfect time in my life. A time when I really needed to “Do the work “ but had no clue how to do it or why I felt stuck! This book was an answer to my prayers! I am grateful to Nicole for this book and her lifelong commitment to Holistic Psychology. I’ve already given it to my brother and I will continue to gift to those who I feel will be receptive to the wisdom expressed in this book.
