From the Back Cover

Einstein was the greatest public idol of the twentieth century. He became famous among the general public for being a great and humble genius, among intellectuals for discovering relativity, among philosophers for redefining the scientific revolution, and among physicists for his pursuit of a unified field theory. These are all great mistakes, and they have driven physics research into the study of alternative universes and other ideas that have no scientific foundation.
This book carefully dissects these myths. It explains the development of relativity in the context of an ancient struggle to understand motion and symmetry. It shows that Einstein's role has been exaggerated, and has been used to undermine science. Physics is no longer the science that all other sciences emulate.

About the Author

Roger Schlafly got his BSE degree from Princeton University in Electrical Engineering (Engineering Physics program), and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught at the University of Chicago and the University of California at Santa Cruz. He currently lives in Santa Cruz, California.

The story goes that an unknown young patent clerk appeared out of nowhere and revolutionized physics with a groundbreaking new theory. This book points out the fallacy of that statement in such complete detail that even an Einstein fan such as myself was forced to rethink things. The synopsis is that the key results commonly credited to Einstein actually were developed previously by Lorentz and Poincare (in regards to relativity), his contribution was some slightly different wording and a bit of circular logic, and in fact Einstein resisted the viewpoint of "modern" spacetime relativity theory that is now taught in textbooks.

Dr. Schlafly attacks the more general idea of the Kuhnian paradigm shift that has infected modern science, i.e., the idea that science proceeds in great leaps propelled by the occasional transcendent genius. Rather, several examples are provided where the true incremental nature of progress has been omitted from the history books.

Would have been 5 stars, but the writing is a bit dry and there are a (very) few off-topic political and religious comments out of the blue.

Wow. If you are an Einstein worshipper, or just someone who has the standard view of Einsteinian genius, prepare to have you hair blown back. Way back.

Roger Schafly demolishes the myth of Einstein as a lone genius, creating relativity theory all by himself. In fact, other famous scientists had put the theory together before him, in a much deeper and more comprehensive fashion. So how the heck does Einstein end up getting all the credit? Read the book and find out.

And although the author can, for sure, "do the math" (PhD, Math, Berkeley), those of you who perhaps struggled with algebra will be pleased to know that the book uses NO MATH! It is a miracle of explication (and for the record, I pretty much, as a rule, do not believe in miracles.)

Side benefits include a concise history of physics and fascinating discussions of the philosophy of science. The expert will find the book careful and accurate, and the novice will find it accessible. I would wager that virtually all will find it shocking.

This book will make you think about physics, history, biography and philosophy. Who could ask for anything more?

When I learned Special Relativity I had been surprised to see that everything in it is named after other people, but somehow the theory is attributed to Einstein. The author makes a good point that science is not well served with an at best over simplified view of how things really developed.

The author makes great points against Einstein not inventing relativity. Einstein apparently took all his ideas from others, without giving them proper credit. The book needs editing to take out redundancy. The author repeats the same evidence too many times in too many of the chapters. It's well documented.

Excellent book. And the author's clear, crisp writing style makes for enjoyable reading.

Many (if not most) theoretical Physicists today know (privately) that Einstein was a fraud. It is rather common knowledge that Einstein stole ideas from other European Physicists who either preceded him or were his contemporaries. Thanks to the internet, scientific papers which Einstein "borrowed" are today widely available as PDF files, and many of these papers even being translated into multiple languages.

The problem is that, for whatever odd reason, it is highly unfashionable to bash Einstein, hence few if any scientists do so (at least publicly). For this reason, this book was refreshing to read.

Albert Einstein was actually a run-of-the-mill Physicist. I can easily think of twenty of his contemporaries who, sadly, get no accolades yet were far beyond Einstein in the ground breaking research they performed.

This is a disturbing book. I expected this book to be a misguided rant based on the author's misunderstanding of relativity. I was surprised to find explanations of relativity that are clear and correct. It is not too surprising that the popular press exaggerates Einstein's genius, but this book proves that distinguished physicists, historians, and philosophers have actually misrepresented what Einstein did.

The information in this book has been available for decades, and it is hard to believe that professors are knowingly continuing to overstate Einstein's contributions. I am now convinced that the Einstein myth has had a negative influence on physics, and continues to do so.

..which challenges Einstein's larger than life image.

The public can often be wrong about a topic, and this book claims
that we have been misled about Einstein, relativity, and the history
of the physics of motion. There are a lot of books on this subject,
and I enjoyed getting an alternate view. The book also explains the
history of the motion of the Earth, going back to the ancient Greeks.
I knew that Poincare was a great genius and a founder of Chaos Theory,
but I didn't know that he was also a founder of relativity. The author
supplies quotes that show that Poincare was ahead of Einstein on
several important aspects of relativity.
