PRO: The author did present some information in the way of tips that might be useful.
CONS: There was too much commentary about the author's personal life. I found myself skipping the beginning because it talked about how she met her husband, etc., etc., etc. The author repeated herself throughout almost every chapter. Rather than discussing "how to" live off grid, the author explained (and repeated) why she did it - it brought her closer to her son and husband. Throughout the book, the author referred to previous chapters without really mentioning why...I found myself re-reading chapters to figure out what the reference was. The book seemed to keep referring to websites to refer for information rather than providing the information. These websites would be better suited for a reference section. Either you will have to write them down or go look for them later.
In any event, if you are looking for a book to read about someone's journey, then it may be a good read for you. However, it is not a "how to" book. It should have been titled "Why we..."
Do you love reading other people's stories? That is what I enjoyed most about "How to Embrace an Off-Grid Lifestyle."
Tammy's story brings together and interesting juxtaposition of ways of living. Her work as a website developer puts her squarely in the 21st century. Her lifestyle choice of homesteading off-grid feels like she is living in the days of the pioneers. At this point in my life, I cannot see myself choosing to live a lifestyle similar to Tammy's, but I loved reading her story.
Her book is certainly a must-read for anyone considering shifting their lifestyle to live closer to nature. The book has checklists of things to consider or tools to have if you are going to live this lifestyle. There are all kinds of resources for everything related to finding property, alternative energy sources, water supply, gardening and food preservation, phone and internet access, wilderness survival and health.
If you or anyone you know is considering living off grid, this is the one-stop shop book for you.
The format of the book is appealing because it starts by discussing what off-grid living is and moves towards how to decide what is right for the reader, how to do it, and even things to consider. I was able to review the soft copy so there were many links that allowed me to see exactly what Tammy was referring to in the text. Mix this with the many photographs from their personal experiences and it not only becomes an informative book but fun to read.
My wife and I have discussed many times over the years, and more often lately, the desire to live off-grid. While I know there are other books on homesteading and similar topics out there, this proves to be one I can use as a blueprint to help us along our journey.
Mrs. Trayer spells out the things they have done for income, why a budget and to-do lists are important, and their real-life trials and tribulations with how it affected them. It is no small task and embracing the off-grid lifestyle should not be something taken lightly. The story of them having to sell the goats while Tammy was sick was a heartache for them and the reader, but it was necessary.
Many of the pondering questions help guide the reader to determine the ins and outs of what to do, how to do, and even why live off-grid. The onset of explaining the different types or options of off-grid living will let you know quickly whether it is something achievable or desirable.
Deciding how to power any portion of the home if at all, was a very valuable question. Some may say solar as a first response but as Tammy points out, if you are surrounded by trees, it may not be an option. The same with wind if you are not in a naturally windy environment.
Deciding on property that fits your needs was another valuable chapter because it took me from the thought pattern of buying any free land to thinking about daily, weekly, and monthly usage. What may be considered great for someone else, may not be what I am looking for in property and resources.
I believe that this book is great not just from the informational content that spur conversations and cause one to think, but because she is a great story teller. I felt that while I was reading, I walked along with them. This makes for a fast, easy, and great reading book.
Again, I am thankful for the eye-opening experience of reviewing How To Embrace An Off-Grid Lifestyle and know I will use a lot of this information in the years to come. I pray the future journey for the Trayer family is a great and safe one. Keep up with them here: TrayerWilderness.com and get updates on her writings and their adventures.
My favorite parts of the book are the cooking and baking, which includes butchering, harvesting, preserving, and a new favorite hobby of mine, foraging. Living off-grid requires a lot of detailed thinking when it comes to tasks we take for granted when living in close proximity to a grocery store and power grids, so every piece of the information taught is extremely valuable.
The book details how to live as a family, a pet owner, and what to do during emergencies. She truly thought of everything, and made it entertaining to read in the process. You can really picture yourself doing the steps listed! I received the book as part of an Ebundle, and it's the most valuable item I've found.
