I went form being your typical “Super formal” blogger to being only semi-formal. I always found that writing took me twice as long because I would try to sound “too perfect.”
A little background:
As a blogger, I am in the rightful habit of building newsletters. But even sending a mass email was always a pain in the neck. [Delete, edit, delete again, replace word, etc, etc].
So over time I became semi-formal, where I would relax a bit but still try to publish something Stephen King would be “kind of” proud of. But I still have room for improvement… lots of it.
This is where Ryan’s book comes in. This frigging thing has truly opened my eyes.
I spent a little while reading it and by the time I was done, all I wanted to do was write like the wind. Why? Because I no longer feel so shackled in my own voice. I no longer care about superficial formalities, because this is not who I am.
I am now embracing a much more casual approach and will continue to do so for the rest of my blogging career.
Guys, I know how you feel (especially if you have written for many formal clients like I have). You think the world is going to end if you publish something that sounds even remotely conversational. You fear criticism.
Stop thinking this way. Remember this: The Web is meant to be conversational. It’s the Web 2.0 – a big community consisting of people like you and me, giving and taking info like fellow buddies.
Stop trying to sound like a published novelist and just release your inner voice. Your true voice. Write the way you speak, and I guarantee you nothing short of success.Read more ›
That Ryan "keeps it real" is what really makes his writing come to life for me. He doesn't reveal any "secrets" that don't have that ring of common sense. But his stories make the references come alive. Knowing is wasn't all unicorns and rainbows encourages me in my journey.
Everything and anything can look like failure when you are right in the middle of it... you have to keep going to find success. Ryan has walked that walk. And keeps going.
The practical advice included in this book has been implemented by Ryan and continues to be implemented. Make no bones about it- there is work to be done if you want to follow your heart and travel all over the place. Biddulph works his community and practices what he preaches on his blog and in this ebook.
My advice? Read the book. Take some notes. And then follow Ryan on his website and social networks like Facebook. You can't hear this stuff once and "get it all".
Be in community. Support others and grow in the process. I think that's what Ryan might say too.
In the end, I am most interested in freeing up more time to write for myself, and in my own authentic voice. And this book has inspired me to work a little harder toward getting there.
I kinda had got lost in sharing stats, hard facts and tutorial type posts with a wee bit of me if any! This is what hit me hard: “Compassionate Bloggers share from an authentic place,” Had I lost that compassion for facts? Yet I’m not sure where I read this; “Stories Sell, Facts tell.” Ryan absolutely Walks the Talk! He pours his authentic compassionate self into his work, be it a blog post or a book.
I found this book super helpful in finding my authentic writing voice again, thank goodness. As I devoured page by page I re-discovered I have been attached to the outcomes, writing for critics, i.e. editing to perfection lol, my inner writing voice has been suffocated long enough haters are my confused fans lol and I can thank Ryan from my heart for that!
“Write as you speak, in fact Stop Speaking and Start Writing” Yes Yes and Yes…Its time to get my voice back and enrich others as I intended at the start of my Writing journey! I needed that kick in the rear…Cheers Bro!
So…Get this book NOW, it will change your outlook to your writing workflow and that can only be a good thing. Burn out will be history and byy gosh we need more authentic writers and bloggers!
I could go on and on yet I know you get my point: It’s WORTH it.
Well done you & Keep rocking Ryan
