Regarding others who have spoken out about how the book criticizes Browne's comparisons of government and the mafia or his emphasis on the individual putting themselves first before helping others, I do find it laughable that some take exception to these truths, harsh as they may be. The traps that Browne has so effectively exposed and discussed should be required reading and discussion in all schools and taught world-wide as the read truth of the world.
I bought this book in 2000 and read it cover to cover and then, over time, forgot about it as events and life took their course. I recently became angry at recent government actions and realized, with a sudden start, that this was precisely the sort of thing covered in Browne's book and I immediately downloaded a copy for my Kindle.
I think the main lesson in this book was to realize that politics and the individual do not, nor ever have mixed. One can get by just fine without dependence on a group of sharks to tell you what you should be doing in life.
And it is even more clear that you, as an individual, have choices, even in the face of systems and groups who seek to control your every move and thought. Freedom is only consequence of stopping and using critical thought, a skill often lacking in today's world and desperately missing from our schools and institutions.
This book is not a one-off read, but a volume to be repeatedly read and which, if used correctly, will have dog eared pages and is part of your core values as a family and a free human.
This book sets forth a workable, pragmatic philosophy that helps you to live in the real world. Harry Browne gets down into even some nitty-gritty, real-world issues that you don't always hear about in most books.
I'm so glad this book is available on Kindle. I have it on my iPad to read from time to time as I travel. I've read the book numerous times and plan to read it many more times. This is one that will change your life for the better. I highly recommend it. I sure helped change my life for the better.

Interesting, even though some of the ideas are a bit unusual for my taste.. But, worth the read.
