Around a simple narrative relating events over a few pivotal days in the lives of its characters, it uses Buddhist teachings to reveal the power of love, the power of shifting one's own awareness, and the power of compassion and generosity to transform anger. The writing is compelling in its simple evocation of New England winter to highlight the connections between the natural and inner worlds and there is just enough storyline to bind the lessons contained in the book into a coherent and tender whole. I have been blessed by actually knowing Janet Ettele and studying with her, and there were many potent moments as I was reading that evoked some scene of those lessons and the absolute joy of those times. The work is a great gift from Janet to all of us.
I have been on a Buddhist Path for a while and am a little familiar with Master Shantideva's teachings. Janet brings the teaching on generosity to life. She is good storyteller, the characters created are so real and familiar. The problems they confront are universal. I treasure this book.
are looking to give themselves a little mental nourishment.. al little treat...
Well, having read this book, and the other two currently in this series, I can confirm that it deserves nothing less than a five star rating.
Not only is 'How Generosity Works' an informative read, but it is also a thoroughly entertaining read to. For such a short book it is amazing how well the author does at breathing lots of life into all of the major characters (Troy, Grace, etc). The way that Janet has weaved a story around all the salient points is superb. It makes learning and absorbing the important lessons to be learned quick, easy and most entertaining.
Even before I had finished this volume I had already placed my order for the next two books. I'll post separate reviews for those, but I can tell you now that they are just as good as this one - and that is saying something.
Excellent work and highly recommended.
While other authors have written longer and more complex analyses of Shantideva's "The Way of the Bodhisattva", Ms. Ettele shows with clear and precise writing that the sum and substance of this suttra is about living compassionately and from the heart. The characters in her book and their situations demonstrate how one can apply the Bodhisattva teachings and practices to our own time and space. While Ms. Ettele is admittedly new to writing fiction, her characters are not wooden devices. On the contrary, Ms. Ettele's characters seem real and modern and very human.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in studying Buddhism generally and I would also recommend it for someone who has been practicing for some time and has taken or is considering taking the Bodhisattva precepts. Although this is a short book it is not a simple book. This book deals with the very meaning of one's life and the purpose of that life from a Buddhist perspective. It is a book that centers around the idea of kindness, suffering, pain, compassion, generosity, selflessness and empathy for all sentient beings. With that in mind, any reader of this book might also wish to read the text this story is centered upon, Shantideva's "The Way of the Bodhisattva". A good Buddhist dictionary such as,"The Seeker's Glossary to Buddhism" might also be helpful.
