Editorial Reviews

Review

"In this informative, easy-to-read book, Shelley Hitz and Heather Hart not only share a wealth of ideas as to how to get honest reviews, they also share why having book reviews is so important and how reviews can have a positive (or negative) effect on your book sales. Readers will LOVE the comprehensive list of places they can go online to get honest reviews for their books. I was excited to discover many online communities of authors who are dedicated to helping other authors. This book is based on practical advice from two educators who are dedicated to supporting authors on their success journey."

- D'vorah Lansky, M.Ed., and bestselling author, BookMarketingMadeEasy.com

"Shelley and Heather have done it again. This easy-to-follow guide gives you the resources you need to get your book dozens of reviews. I fully recommend 'How to Get Honest Reviews' for any author looking to separate from the pack."

- Bryan Cohen, BuildCreativeWritingIdeas.com

"This might sound like hyperbole, but after reading 'How to Get Honest Reviews,' I couldn't help but thinking it should be called 'The Ultimate Guide to Getting Honest Reviews.' The section on how to develop your own book review program was outstanding. I really liked the step by step approach the authors shared about how they started their own successful book review program, including samples of emails you can model, what resources to use and exactly how to set up your program. They didn't leave anything out. As they say, book reviews are like gold for authors and I believe any new or experienced author will benefit by studying Hart's and Hitz's system."

Pro: Very helpful advice! This book contains the bottom line explanation of what Amazon considers legal in regards to reviews. This was very insightful and informative! I read it in one sitting, but I will definitely be returning to my highlights in the future for real life application.

4 stars for its practical, informative & easy use; the only negative is the first two pages.

Con: the book started with "before you begin" instructions to go to a blog before reading, then had a promotional advertisement. I really like this author, so I persevered; otherwise, I would have closed the book on page 2 for cheesiness. So read the book, but skip the first two pages.

I have followed Shelly (and Heather) for some time now, and love her stuff, I think of it as a bias for good materials. I have purchased a lot of other similar works and the "big names" seem to have more fluff. This distills it down a lot, but still there is much valuable, actionable material. If you are serious about getting your books out to many (as I have done) this is a book you can really put to work. There is one or more suggestions, I believe is worth hundreds. (I have gladly paid that kind of money for such info) My suggestion is get it and follow her works.
To be very clear I received this book in return for an honest review, I do not review books that have little value, this one does, get it and act on it!

The publishing world changes at such a rapid rate these days it's often difficult to keep up with new techniques but as I started reading 'How to Get Honest Reviews' I wondered if it would be just for brand new authors or if there might be something new I could incorporate into my own marketing plans. As usual, Shelley and Heather did not disappoint!

This book is thorough, gives very specific step-by-step instructions on how to action the advice given and even additional references if you need to dig more deeply. Some of the strategies may seem tedious and time-consuming at first but it's worth it in the long run.

In the past I've focused on blogs for reviews so one of my favorite sections was the one on how to search the Amazon top reviewer list and look for people who review books in your genre. There's also a great list of Facebook groups where the members are specifically looking for books to review. The time it takes to develop these types of lists is huge and this book helps save authors a lot of time.

Another 'ah-ha' moment was when I discovered that you can actually send a .mobi file directly to someone's Kindle! I didn't even realize I had a Kindle email address. It just goes to show that there are so many layers and having a book like this helps effortlessly peel them away.

I will go ahead admit that I got this book in exchange for a review, but by the time I reached the end of chapter two, I deleted it - then I went and bought it. It is certainly worth it.

Currently, I do not write books; I am an archivist. I take old books (the type that maybe one in ten thousand will read) and preserve them. For what I do, the need for a review is negligible. However, I am also a reader and reviews play a huge part in whether or not I buy a book - and they even play a part after I purchase the book - and if the reviews do not match what I see in the book, I will return it. Since I am dependent on reviews, I am a bit curious about the subject.

"How to Get Honest Reviews" is an easy-to-follow, yet highly detailed, presentation on the subject. It covers the benefits (and necessity) of having them, but also how to go about getting them. Amazon reviews are covered, of course, but also how to gain reviews on the blog front, social media, give-aways, and so on. The steps were very clear, but I was equally impressed with the level of detail given in what I call, "Watch fors." Each venue has their own rules in how a book a presented for reviews (as well as how to write a review). You do not have to worry about find these little reminders; they are embedded throughout the text, particularly where there are differences in rules across venues.

As an archivist, I am concerned about the book's structure and layout. I am pleased with this one (I am notorious for returning badly formatted books). Not only is the layout easy on the eyes, the table of contents work. Here, the TOC is a little more important since the book can be read in any order.

I think that this is an excellent book and one worth keeping close by. It is more than a tutorial, but a solid reference.

As an author with my second book in the works, I've been reading articles about the large number of fake 5-star reviews that are out there and asking, "How does an honest author compete with THAT?"

Well, there are quite a few answers in this book. The basic approach, of course, is simple: Write a quality book, with great information in it if it's non-fiction, and then get a bunch of people to review it. If it's good, then you'll get the 5-star reviews.

It's getting people to review it, for me, that's the more difficult part. And that's where this book helps.

I've been through the book marketing cycle before, and there were quite a few sources of honest reviews in here that I wasn't familiar with. Will I be using most of them this time around? You bet.

By the way, it's a quick read. The authors don't waste your time with a bunch of wordiness or non-essentials.

In short, I think this book is well worth getting.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. That review has been based on "what if" -- "What if I had bought this book instead of being given a copy, and wanted to review it?"
