This book will appeal to a wide audience, not only musical theatre enthusiasts, but also to anyone who enjoys a well-written tale of tragedy and triumph. Even “True Crime” addicts will find satisfaction in the insiders experience with a senseless act of violence and its effects on the survivors.
I especially recommend this book as a gift for anyone facing seemingly insurmountable problems, whether they are the horrors of high school or life-altering loss, “How I Grew Up” will offer encouragement because it reminds us how durable we all can be - with a little help from our friends.
With the support of her sisters, her teachers, friends and fellow students, she finds the strength to audition for the school play a very short time after the tragedy, lands a part, and goes on to perform beautifully in the production - an affirmation of her maturity and determination at this critical time.
It is a compelling story - well written, with the main characters carefully drawn and easy to believe. The main events themselves are all the more remarkable because they are true, and reveal the grace and determination of Melanie and her family in this sad time in their lives.
A terrible family tragedy happens to Melanie, a small town girl. And long-awaited auditions are coming up for the high school production of "Carousel." The author has created wonderful characters in Melanie's sisters, friends and teachers, who support her through her ordeal and ultimate triumph. The author is herself a teacher and director, and her description of the mounting of this school musical production is spot on.
