This book is about the powerful, sometimes lifesaving, yet sometimes highly destructive antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Best known of these drugs are Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Levaquin (levofloxacin), as well as four others. This book, How We Can Halt the Cipro and Levaquin Catastrophe: the Worst Medication Disaster in U.S. History, has two main goals. The first goal is to alert patients and doctors of the truly destructive capability of these drugs to cause serious, sometimes long term, sometimes permanent injuries. The capacity of these drugs for such damage has been attested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and others many times and is by now incontrovertible. Hundreds of patients, many of whom are quoted in this book, have confirmed their long-lasting injuries to me, while many hundreds more have been ignored or dismissed by their doctors. This must stop. Ignoring these problems has only made the problem worse. My second goal in writing How We Can Halt the Cipro and Levaquin Catastrophe: the Worst Medication Disaster in U.S. History is to stimulate the interest of government, the drug industry, medical institutions and all others for any and all ideas regarding remedies, solutions, and any other ideas that may help end the suffering experienced by patients with the Fluoroquinolone Toxicity Syndrome that can affect many human systems including the musculoskeletal, nervous, psychiatric, gastrointestinal, and others. As you will see, I have offered some ideas for therapies that may provide benefit to some of the injured. I think it is imperative that we follow a trail that may lead us to an understanding of how these drugs work and particularly how they injure, and most of all how we might help people heal, obtain pain reduction and hope. Thousands of lives, young and old, depend on the efforts that we make.

I suffered from adverse side effects from Cipro in 2008 leading to debilitating issues. I was unable to walk or function for 2 1/2 years. My doctor took test after test all coming back normal with no explanation to what was the underlying cause for my pain and disability. We never suspected that Cipro was the culprit in spite of my story to every doctor I saw was, "it all started when I took Cipro for a bladder infection." I only put it together when my mom was given Cipro for a bladder infection and after just 3 doses collapsed on the floor in excruciating pain and unable to get up. This led me to research the drug, and to my horror, finding I was not the only one harmed by this medication. In my research I stumbled upon Dr. Cohen's website and learned a lot about this issue including his treatment of using magnesium in repairing the damage. Within two weeks I was able to walk without my painful limp and was able to resume some of my normal routine. It is now 2016 and if I am not careful still can suffer pain in the muscles that were damaged. My doctor was still reluctant to believe that Cipro was the cause in spite of my bringing all the research to her that I had found. I am so happy that Dr. Cohen finally wrote this book so I can give it to my doctor. They have no idea the injury they are causing. This is a must read for every doctor who prescribes this antibiotic. While it may be very beneficial when other drugs fail, it should be used as a last resort. Just recently the FDA has issued a warning that states it should not be given for ordinary infections as the side effects out way the benefits and is only recommended in dire cases. Finally maybe doctors will get the message. If you have ever taken any of the quinolone drugs you need to read this book.

I read the book with much interest since I had been affected by Levofloxacin after taking only five 500mg tablets five years ago. Prior to taking Levofloxacin, I was a successful competitive dancer. I was not told by the prescribing doctor that there could be a side effect of this drug. In fact, after having severe tendon pain, she told me that it was not from the Levofloxacin. She gave me a cortisone injection. I went home and my pain got worse. I could barely walk for months. Every time I started to feel better, if I used my legs or arms, the pain returned. Pain kept me from sleeping. A tendon in my left shoulder ruptured causing a hematoma in my left inside elbow. The same doctor said it was not a ruptured tendon. I knew it was because I heard it and felt it rupture and end up at the hematoma location. It was confirmed by my Orthopedic Surgeon. After five years I still had serious pain in my feet and knees and many times I had to use crutches to get around at home. I started taking the supplements recommended by Dr. Cohen. Within a few weeks I was feeling better. It has been ten weeks and I now have no pain. I believed that I would have pain for the rest of my life. Now I have hope that I will be able to dance again soon. Thank you Dr. Cohen.

If taking Cipro, take Vitamin E and magnesium at the same time ...

He says IF people were told to take Vitamin E and magnesium at the same time they are taking the Cipro or Levaquin, they would have much better chances of not being damaged (the test was for lesions on cartilage on mice, iirc), but there were many fewer lesions for the ones that were given BOTH Vitamin E AND magnesium. Why can't people simply be told this, if they have to take these meds "as a last resort?" This poor guy has died since he wrote the book. Worthwhile reading! I wish more DOCTORS would read it. I believe this book has been re-titled to _What You Must Know About the Hidden Dangers of Antibiotics: How the Side Effects of Six Popular Antibiotics Can Destroy Your Health_, and is now available under that title on Amazon, also the e-auction site.

Why don't I heal like I used to

This drug was given to me for an uncomplicated UTI and always have gone through so called "invisible diseases or symptoms". Nobody has an answer to why I might have peri menopausal symptoms at my late 20's? Why do I have symptoms of RA even if my tests came out negative? Why don't I heal like I used to? My legs get tired after 5 minutes of treadmill as if I have lost all the strength. I had to give up college because of psychotic symptoms this medicine gave me which started right after having 2 doses. I am not crazy to be going through so many symptoms at the age of 28, none of the medical professionals agree with me. By the way I got to know there is something called "Floxed" after 6 months of hell. The forums helped me a lot and the book for sure gives me chills but also some strength to accept reality. I am working on my health but this drug destroyed my relationship, career, studied and my body. It freaking messed with my DNA, if there was a test that this drug this to me, I would have scored 100/100. Thanks Dr. Cohen for bringing it to the world. I hope more and more people know about it.

This book helped me understand what happened to my body and mind after several episodes of taking Cipro. It can't solve all my issues, but at least now I understand them. I now know what happened to me that made me suddenly old. If I had not discovered the problem, who knows what the medical profession would have done to me trying to fix something only to make it worse. Thank God I am physician and drug adverse.
The lesson: research and understand every prescription and don't rely on your doctor to know or understand the side effects.

I have just glanced through this book received to-day and strangely enough opened to a page of a woman who had almost the same story as mine. I sooo wish I had read this book, or even checked the internet, before taking a series of one of these antibiotics for a UTI. These drugs are DANGEROUS. I now have some type of neuropathy in my legs, feet, hands etc. as well as pins and needles, numbness but at same time sensitivity - I touch a corner of a piece of paper and it hurts! Pain and heaviness in legs, sore shoulders etc. I did not read the three pages of information given to me by drug store (in Canada) but just glanced at them as wasn't well ... but then I saw the WARNING, not just side effects, and should not be given to those over 60 (I am 73) unless absolutely necessary.. WHY WHY WHY are these medications still being used for medical problems that could be addressed by other medications. I know I will be either loaning this book to friends, neighbours and relatives or they will be buying it.... too late for me, but please read up on this. There is tons of information about the effects of these drugs.... I wonder if my Doctor would prescribe them for his wife and family. I am sure I will find the book very interesting and informative.

A must have for people suffering from the adverse side effects of fluoroquinolones (antibiotic group). Unfortunately, there is no miracle cure for these problems and you will not find it in this book. At worst, you will be angry to learn that the problem has been known for a long time, although the authorities are not doing much (especially in Canada). At best, the book will give you credibility after people who question the cause of your problems.

when you go from an abled bodied 54 year old single mother, entrepreneur, healthy, active and engaged person to a disabled person overnight because of an antibiotic....one has to wonder what the hell the FDA was thinking approving this family of antibiotics to begin with!!!
