I've been into extreme horror for many years - from Clive Barker to Jack Ketchum and more - and it takes a lot to make me cringe - yet these three books do it. There are elements and scenes from these three books that sometimes make it very hard to continue, especially when you remember, these are just high school kids.
Highly recommended if you like disturbing horror on a realistic level. And if you have kids, you'll likely want to keep them on a tighter leash after reading these books.
Atty Eve has masterfully kept the story alive by showing the growth of Cosette from the mousy victim of a bully to the dominating owner of said bully. She weaves a tapestry of teenage high-schoolers struggling with their identities and needs to belong. In this third instalment, Cosette is both the hero of the media for her killing of the Poser Gang and rescuing Hilda, her aforementioned tormentor, and the villain, for not being the victim society expects a young girl to be.
Cosette has taken over the lunch table. And we all know it is in the lunchroom that all of high school’s hierarchy is determined. She uses sexuality – every teenage boy’s kryptonite – coercion, and a certain charm she is not fully aware of to pull her friends into her world. They see her killings as a necessary evil, sick and twisted as she may be. She finally comes to terms with whom and what she is, a serial killer. She accepts the world’s view of her as the Ville Vigilante or Double V for short while she feeds her addiction for blood.
It is not easy to carry a story for three books but Atty Eve has turned the murder/crime thriller into a work of art. How To Kill a Pedophile is a self-help book on going for that elusive junior book in a series. She keeps the story fresh, she keeps the twists turning, and she keeps the action lively. There was a part in the middle where while adding new friends to the group it became somewhat wordy, but this book still rates five stars.
