How I Learn: A Kid’s Guide to Learning Disability Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

How I Learn introduces the concept of a learning disability in concrete terms for younger students. This supportive and upbeat story reassures readers that they are capable, and can use "smart strategies" to help themselves learn. And that's better than OK. That's GREAT! A Note to Parents, Caregivers, and Professionals is included, with suggestions to guide discussion and help children identify their particular strengths and challenges.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—This useful picture book about coping with learning disabilities focuses on a boy with reading difficulties. As he comes to understand his challenges and accept his differences, he realizes there are other children in his classroom who learn differently in other subjects. The authors present some excellent strategies for students and parents in a gentle, accessible manner. When the other children's challenges are mentioned, strategies for dealing with them are then woven into the story, such as a boy who has problems with math who uses a calculator at school. The book has a reassuring tone, and the approaches for dealing with the problems are actionable, though it does border on the repetitive (with the phrase "and that's OK" being slightly overused). Ideal for children's nonfiction and parent support collections.—Mary Hazelton, formerly at Warren & Waldoboro Elementary Schools, ME

This book was fantastic!! My grade 2 child kept talking to me about another child in his class who was struggling academically. I had him read this book to understand what can cause a child to struggle. It led to a great conversation about disabilities and about judging others without knowing what they are dealing with. I would recommend this book to ANY child.

Didn't like how it explained the disability

I wish I had this book a few years back when I first discovered the severity of my daughters focus issues. This is a nice discussion book for parents or educators to have with elementary age students about learning disabilities and how they affect people in different ways, and that it is o.k. The afterward portion is for the adult to read ahead of time so they see how to best make this into a conversational book. Since my daughter is older we read this portion together and chatted about our shared struggles with learning and some of the things we have found that help us, such as repetition, reading aloud, note taking, and scheduling.

An excellent view on learning 'differences' which provides insight for both child and adult.
