Editorial Reviews

Review

"In How to Listen When God Is Speaking, Fr. Mitch Pacwa challenges Catholics to embrace their fundamental vocation: to be a listener. In the best of the Ignatian tradition, he teaches us to hear God's voice--above the noise we encounter each day--and take it to heart. This book is a real gift for our spiritual lives. I recommend it for all readers. " --Most Rev. Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York

"Pope Benedict XVI likes to remind us that a priest is a man of God. In Fr. Pacwa's book, a man of God introduces us to God so that we can listen to him well. This is a book helpful to both the friends of God and those still distant from him." --Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago

"Slowing down and listening are "must do's" if we are to grow in our relationship with Christ and his Church. But unfortunately, in today's hectic and harried world, even Catholics with the best of intentions have a hard time placing these activities at the top of their priority lists. In How to Listen When God is Speaking, Fr. Mitch uses his loving but direct voice to help modern-day Catholics get back to basics in order to hear what God has to say." --Teresa Tomeo, Syndicated Catholic Talk Show Host and Catholic Author

"Practical, clear, personable, and scriptural--everything I love about Fr. Mitch Pacwa's teaching is here. This book is a glimpse into a great man's heart as he shares the lessons he's learned from God's word and the Church as well as from the people he's known. To read this is to learn and grow closer to God." --Scott Hahn, professor of theology, Franciscan University of Steubenville

"We're good at seeking advice from friends, talk shows, and celebrities, but in this book--filled with his trademark wit and practical insights--Fr. Pacwa gives us a guide for listening to the Creator himself. He has even included questions at the end of each chapter to impel us to action." --Raymond Arroyo, creator and host of EWTN's "World Over Live" and author of Mother Angelica

Extraordinary book by this most devout & dedicated Jesuit priest, Fr. Mitch Pacwa. He starts w/ a dedication which reflects love & humor. I describe him as a "master teacher" because he explains this most complex topic of prayer with clarity & simplicity. It's almost magical, but not - his writing IS divinely inspired. This book is so easy to read I almost felt like I was cheating. Though this book was a quick, enjoyable read the first time through, I definitely plan on rereading it as a tool to keep me on track & encouraged in my ongoing prayer life.

This is a book really worth reading for anyone who aspires to know and love God. Fr. Mitch starts with the basics that one needs to practice into order to be in a position to discern the will of God. He then shows that on the road to discernment, we need to be aware of the spiritual warfare that is going on, including the different forms of temptations and false gods that may confront us at different stages of our journey. He discusses God's grace during times of spiritual consolation as well as spiritual desolation. He teaches techniques for praying so that we can be better able to discern God's will. He also shows how suffering can benefit us in our spiritual development when we unite it with the passion of Jesus.

The book is about 173 pages. It's difficult to put down once you start reading it. I'm glad I purchased it and recommend it highly.

This small book, Written by Fr. Mitch Pacwaw started out quite well, I thought. But then, by the 3rd chapter, "the movements of our souls", he goes into very short overview type summation of St. Ignatius" Rule. The last half of the book is very scholastic list of "Ways" to hear God-The Rosary, liturgical and written prayer, and reading scripture. This writing, 173 pgs. would be a good "starting point" for a young person or someone just starting out on the journey of faith.

I would recommend Fr. Timothy Gallagher's "The Discerment of spirits" to get a good, deep study of the Rule of St. Ignatius, and Fr. Thomas Dubay's "Prayer Primer" or "Fire within" for a well written, and easy to read, yet spiritually deep study on types of prayer.

Most of us are good at talking to God but not so good at listening to Him. Our noise-filled days make it hard, but here is some help.
If you have trouble reading St. Theresa or St. John of the Cross, try Father Mitch. He has a knack for "bringing the hay down to where the goats can reach it."

Fr. Mitch Pacwa is a rarity. Not only is he an orthodox Jesuit, but he is a scholarly theologian who is also child-like in his relationship with God. Like the little children whom Christ welcomed near to Him --- and called us to imitate --- Fr. Mitch calls all to become child-like in their docility toward God, through which we might then be more open to "hearing" God's voice within and sensing His direction in our lives.
