What can you find in this book:
It's a well-structured guide on how to reach your audience the best way and also how to market your books by developing your brand. So, the book is not just about getting the book into the right hands, getting reviews, getting the best look of your book, but also about some brand-building activites such as guest interviews, public speaking, podcadt, vlogs, etc. The book is full of useful links to other resources. Also, check out Joanna's blog for writer's - thecreativepenn.com
This book in addition to M. Hyatt's Platform are probably my favourite in the author brand building category.
I've read many books on the subject, and almost all offer valuable advice. But hers is the most well-organized, comprehensive, and up-to-date. If Ms. Penn received a royalty check for each additional book sale that she's generated for all the authors her work has helped, she would be fabulously rich.
"How to Market a Book" is an invaluable guide, a marketing bible that every author should buy, study, and apply religiously. I plan to reread it soon myself, this time taking copious notes.
Robert Bidinotto,
bestselling Kindle author of
"HUNTER" and "BAD DEEDS"
The author begins by telling her story and the mistakes she made when starting out. This will hopefully help aspiring writers not to make the same mistakes. She discusses marketing myths and how you personally define success. The book is divided into five parts. Part I Marketing principles, Part II Book fundamentals, Part III Short-term marketing overview, Part IV the author platform, and Part V launching your book.
There are links throughout the ebook to other sites that expand on the subject. I went to Joanna's website "The Creative Pen" and found hours of information that I'm only beginning to devour. Her podcasts are very informative and she interviews experts on the different aspects of book marketing and publication.
This book is a must read for anyone who aspires to become a successful author. I highly recommend it. -- Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas

This is what I liked about the book:
1) good overall flow and structure to the book
2) personable style
3) stuffed full of links to external useful resources
4) thorough
5) the author's own methods and marketing routines
The book takes you through the strategic aspects of marketing your book, then looks at the specifics of building your author platform and how to sell books without a platform.
The bit which was missing for me was the opportunity to take stock, both at the end of each chapter and the end of each part. There was a huge amount of ideas and how-to's described in the book. It would have helped me as a reader if the book contained exercises or action points. I may be wrong, but at times this book felt a little like a collection of blog posts strung together.
I felt the book lacked a marketing plan or even marketing template for readers to download and use as they read the book.
However, I loved Penn's authenticity and integrity and will be recommending this book highly to my 2 author communities.
I am starting a blog where I intend to do content marketing related to writing, and I found the book very helpful on blogging tips, as well as on time management and useful information sources to check out. In the future I will go back to parts 1, 2 and 4 for sure!
I am not sure that the public speaking/TV/radio/press/podcasting is for me, but it was an interesting read nonetheless.
I found some problems in the book, though, including some repetitions and an extra bullet point with no text to it. Also, as Social Media keeps changing, I found that some of the information provided was a bit out of date.
My main concern, though, is that I was reading from a Kindle 4th generation. I usually use it in Plane Mode, but decided to try some of the embedded links that interested me. After a few “Invalid Certificates” I stopped trying to open links from my Kindle. I guess I’ll have to check the book out from my laptop, but as the book relies so much in links to other sources, the overall experience wasn’t as good as expected.
The book outlines what you can do to optimise your Amazon presence and then moves onto broader spheres of influence, such as social media, blogging, and speaking. Joanna covers some big topics here, and this book serves as a useful introduction to them, highlighting the breadth and diversity of ways you can market your book. Even though I'm already blogging, I finished the book with a ton of new ideas to explore and implement.
Probably the most encouraging thing about this book is that she achieves a balance between being encouraging and optimistic, and realistic. She makes no bones that selling self-published books requires consistent work but also points out that it is doable if you're willing to spend the time producing quality content and marketing.
Highly recommended as a useful, no-nonsense guide for self-publishers.
I finished the book and read it again. The prose is lucid, the concepts well explained. Joanna tours us through possible methods, showing what works for her. There's no formula for instant success, but we are shown various devices which may prove useful in promoting a novel. Email lists, blogs, pod-casting and video work, even the author’s personality, few areas are neglected. Joanna shows what is possible, helping you to pick the right ones for your work.
On-line marketing can change overnight, but the author anticipates this, suggesting how to test differing tools, finding the right selection for particular tasks.
Strongly recommended.
