Cali gun laws are so strict and change like the weather

I have the 1996 version and it was fantastic for 1996 but firearms violations in Cali are so serious that you MUST HAVE an up-to-date version or you risk imprisonment. A great deal has changed since 2008. I don't know for sure but the authors probably went crazy trying to keep up with the crazy evershifting Cali gun laws.

California has enacted a complicated and unfriendly regime of laws that regulate gun ownership and use. This book explains all this mess in an organized and easy to follow format. Plus, this book is simply darned interesting to read if you are a California gun owner/enthusiast, as I am. I am a lawyer myself, and I have read and understood the California statutes directly, but I still find this book interesting and useful and I still find myself referring to it. One caveat is that you have to watch out for recent gun law changes after the publication of this book. The California Legislature is full of anti-gun politicians and it is a rare year that a change in the law (to make things harder for gun owners and users) is not on the table. But other than that, this book is pretty much the "last word" in how to conform to California's gun laws.

UPDATE: the author publishes an on-line 2014 update (at no charge) to keep up with changes to the California gun laws. Be sure to download and review it.

California firearms laws are some of the most confusing and difficult to understand. Since "ignorance of the law is no excuse" this is the absolute best starting point. With many concrete examples it does a good job of explaining how the various statutes work. It is usually required reading in Concealed Carry Weapons permit classes and is the best book of this type. The only thing lacking is more depth, but that isn't the point of this book. I can say that after reading this the depth of understanding that I wanted was easier to reach. One nice thing is that he also maintains a listing of each editions changes on his website. Just because I have the 2008 edition doesn't mean I'm out of date. Machtinger does a great job and I highly recommend this book and have loaned out my copies many times.

If you are thinking of buying a gun its important to read this book. It goes over the convoluted patchwork that is California gun law. It also has references to continue your self education. I like how it uses short stories to illustrate different predicaments.
