About the Author
Patricia Tanttila Holmberg is a native of Central Montana who moved to Colorado to attend the University College of Music. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music (in piano performance) there. She taught one year at Gulf Park College in Gulfport, MS before going back to Boulder for grad school, and then two years in the Arapahoe County Public Schools in Littleton, CO. After those two years she began teaching piano in her home studio as she raised her five children. She is still teaching and loving it as much as ever now that her children are grown and she has 10 grandchildren and two great grandsons. She is grateful for music in her life, and the fact that, even as much as you learn, there is always, still yet, another insight or challenge waiting around the corner. It is never dull and boring, and provides healthy mental activity along with much sheer enjoyment for an older person. Pat has composed numerous piano pieces (much - thought not all - of it in the jazz/ragtime genre), choral music, instrumental, orchestral and vocal music. Descriptions of those may be seen at her website: www.patholmberg.com

If you are a beginner (especially an older beginner) and are looking for advice on how to practice the piano, then this book might suit you well. The advice it provides is broad, general and motivational. It is laced with similes and personal anecdotes. I found it a bit repetitive and lofty. 4 stars.
If you are looking for detailed advice in relation to specific piano techniques, there are other books that are more suitable. For example, you won't find advice on how to practice playing staccatos, or how to practice using the pedals. These are usually described (with practice material) in piano method and/or piano technic books (as they are needed). 2 stars.
Listening to my inner voice for a deeper connection with the music, techniques for difficult passages.
The best of all was that the more deeply I understand and connect with the music, the more deeply I will connect with others. Thank you...a wonderful read!
