A practical and comprehensive guide to surviving the greatest disaster of our time, from New York Times bestselling self-help author and beloved CBS Sunday Morning science and technology correspondent David Pogue.

You might not realize it, but we’re already living through the beginnings of climate chaos. In Arizona, laborers now start their day at 3 a.m. because it’s too hot to work past noon. Chinese investors are snapping up real estate in Canada. Millennials have evacuation plans. Moguls are building bunkers. Retirees in Miami are moving inland.

In
How to Prepare for Climate Change, bestselling self-help author David Pogue offers sensible, deeply researched advice for how the rest of us should start to ready ourselves for the years ahead. Pogue walks readers through what to grow, what to eat, how to build, how to insure, where to invest, how to prepare your children and pets, and even where to consider relocating when the time comes. (Two areas of the country, in particular, have the requisite cool temperatures, good hospitals, reliable access to water, and resilient infrastructure to serve as climate havens in the years ahead.) He also provides wise tips for managing your anxiety, as well as action plans for riding out every climate catastrophe, from superstorms and wildfires to ticks and epidemics.

Timely and enlightening,
How to Prepare for Climate Change is an indispensable guide for anyone who read The Uninhabitable Earth or The Sixth Extinction and wants to know how to make smart choices for the upheaval ahead.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“It’s always a good idea to prepare for a disaster, especially one you see coming. [Pogue] has got you covered." New York Times Book Review

"[Pogue's] urgency makes the book an indispensable resource... A long, comprehensive book perfect for reading in parts, one that consistently reminds us that while it’s too late for a climate rewind, being prepared is the next best thing. Practicality, awareness, and survivalism converge in a sturdy cautionary handbook on enduring Earth’s new realities."
Kirkus Review

"Reasoned and nonsensationalized. [Pogue's] final message? Prepare. That's one thing readers can control, and this extensive guide offers lots to think about and plenty of practical advice."

This isn't a book about climate change science, though lots of it gets explained though the author's frame of the subject. This is a book of practical suggestions of what you can actually do to deal with the changing world. Things that are happening now and things that are coming in the near future. Some of the suggestions are simple things you can do now - only run fans when people are in the room, fans cool people not rooms. Preparing a g0-bag for emergencies and what should be in it. Some suggestions are big things that would take tons of prep - major house renovations, moving to a new location. But it all makes sense and there are a lot lot lot of things I hadn't thought about. Not all of the book will apply to each reader. For example, the chapter on prep for potential wild fires isn't an issue where I live. But I'd rather have a huge book with a few sections that don't apply to me than have important things left out. Plus you might find those sections interesting even if they don't directly impact you at the moment.

This is the first book in ages that I dog-eared many corners and plan to actually refer to again. First job is preparing that go-bag!

I haven't really read anything yet. It seems to be well indexed.

Hope it is just for information - i.e. not critical to survival.

At 74, I imagine I'll die in my bed before all this comes to pass.

If you've ever seen David Pogue on TV, you know what a great sense of humor he has. He's also a gifted writer of science-based literature. This is an easy-to-read, well-researched, well-organized guide to getting ready for natural (or man-made) disasters. And it’s presented in Pogue's signature light-hearted style.

I really enjoy David's episodes of NOVA, and thankfully he brings that same energy into this book.

You get a lot of well explained facts about climate change, and realistic suggestions of actions that you can take. Each one of which taking up no more than about a sentence or paragraph so that reading never becomes either overwhelming or boring.

This book is far more realistic in it's predictions of what the future holds and what actions you can take to protect yourself than scientists or preppers present to us. It focuses on challenges that will need to be overcome over time and obtainable alternatives to how and where we currently live, instead of simply telling you to stop using fossil fuels, and/or that society will suddenly collapse one day.

We all can do something to help the planet and our species. This book is packed full of information on what and what not to do. It has web sites and resources for you to investigate. Thinking of moving? Well this book has suggestions on where to move to and why. Building a house, get this book and learn more about building that house better. A great reference book to have around the house. Loved it David Pogue!

A clear, detailed book about what can be expected from climate change and how to prepare yourself and your family for dealing with the emergencies that will surely arise from its increasingly dangerous weather events. I found the well researched knowledge and clear suggestions to be invaluable in putting together a plan and what is necessary to be well prepared. I sleep a bit more comfortably knowing I won't have to start from scratch when disaster strikes, or make serious mistakes when it comes time to recover from any damage to my home. I recommend this invaluable book without hesitation to anyone who is concerned about climate change and being prepared.

3.0 out of 5 stars USA focused
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2021
I don't usually write reviews. I am interested in climate change and practical things that can be done on a personal level to minimise it's effects on our lives. This book does just that, if you live in the USA. I am based in the UK, all the maps about floods, draught etc are all US focused.
Perhaps this was obvious to some but I did not see it stated this was a US focused book.
Nice idea though.

This book focuses primarily on those living in the USA so has little relevance to people who don't. Some interesting opinions and tips but most of which is common knowledge.
