"Pet" focus with a "Farm" emphasis!

A reasonably broad topic book, with a very nice introduction to the choosing/breeding/raising areas and some great photo-to-text reinforcement. This book covers the general information well. Especially good as a general guide.

The photos and illustrations make the book. Well put together!

Whether you're raising goats for milk or meat or have them as pets, HOW TO RAISE GOATS provides an excellent survey covering everything from choosing among breeds to proper care, feeding, and keeping a herd healthy. Rural collections in particular will find patrons interested in these specifics, coming from a longtime goat farmer who explains all the pros and cons of goat-raising.

I have a 4-H group that is always wanting more information on goats, specifically dairy goats. This book gives a wide variety of information and has great pictures for visualization. I would highly recommend this book for beginner to intermediate knowledge on goats. It is current and offers information in a different way than you might get from Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats. (another book I would recommend)

This is by far the best book we have found for raising goats! It is very well illustrated and covers every topic you would want to know. I especially like the explanations of the different breeds/types of goats. It helps you make choices on goat care, fertility issues, etc. by covering all the options so you can make informed decisions. You will not be disappointed in your purchase!

If you've caught the latest round of livestock enthusiasm and decided that you want to consider getting a few goats, get this book. It covers basically everything you'll want to know.

From which breeds are good for which purposes, through how to find a reputable farm or shop to buy from, and on to selecting the individual goats to take home with you, the first few chapters give you a guide for figuring out how to start on your caprican adventure.

There are a few chapters in the middle about feeding, sheltering, and containing goats, and a few about diseases and ailments and treatments (though they seem to expect you'll have a veterinarian to treat your goats instead of expecting you to have a suture kit handy, which is probably true for most small-scale goat keepers).

After that, a quartet of chapters focusing on the specific needs depending on why you have goats. Dairy goats and meat goats have very different feeding requirements, if you're keeping goats for their hair you'll need to know how to keep them clean and when to shear them, and if you just want a pet you might not care at all to read instructions on how to milk a nanny or help her birth a kid.

No matter why you plan to get goats, even if it's just to keep the horse company, this book is a great place to start.

This is a great book for new goat owners. I love the nice pictures. I also have Storey's guide to raising goats and as meantioned in another review these are the best 2 books to have. Storey's for the detailed information and this one for the pictures and info. I'm very glad I got this and would highly recommend it for the novice and probably not so novice as well.

This book contains a lot of information appropriate for beginning to intermediate goat projects. While it carries the FFA logo, it is also appropriate for 4-H members as well as the general public. Profiles different goat breeds, provides basic care, housing, transportation and feeding instructions and gives a brief introduction to showmanship.

There is also a good section towards the end with basic goat illnesses, etc. that makes a good reference for owners.

The book does not go into a lot of detail and is more of a general guide on how to get started. I would not recommend this for someone who is breeding/showing professionally as it does not have enough detailed information for more advanced goat projects. However, it is great for kids as it uses simple language and covers a lot of the basics.
