This book was obviously written for someone who doesn’t know a thing about basic fashion. I can’t believe this is even written for an adult. It’s insulting. Each era is rushed through in only 5 or 6 pages, with microscopic photos and information that doesn’t even skim the surface. How is it remotely possible to learn anything useful for each 100 year era in only 5 pages? If you live under a rock and don’t know what a neckline, skirt, or what sleeves are, then I guess you’ll be enlightened by this book. For those who actually want in-depth historical coverage, look elsewhere.

This book belongs in the library of anyone who has an interest in costume history. The information precisely presented. The book offers examples from smaller collections which aren't often seen. After reading it cover-to-cover, I've already consulted it several times.

I found this book to be on the superficial side. I have numerous books on historical dress, and I hoped that this would add detail to some of my less informative books on the topics, but I found the opposite to be true. The book was recommended by a seamstress, and I can see how it would be helpful to someone looking for specific information on certain aspects for a specific period, but for a researcher looking for fashion context that is both broad AND specific. This book makes the mistake of being very specific in a very shallow and narrow manner.

This is a fabulous reference for period clothing. I've also learned the actual name of some things that I didn't before.

An absolutely fantastic guide to understanding what historical costumes "tell" us about the people who wore them and the times they lived in. If you want to understand anything from busks to bustles, this is your go-to resource!

If you are like me and love history and photos, this book provides help for dating a photo you may have. I can use this book to estimate which 10 or 20 year period my historical image were likely made. I sew and love the opportunity to see the lovely dresses with detail descriptions this book also shows the reader. Delish!

I bought this as a gift for my daughter-in-law for Christmas as she is very into fashion over the years. She enjoys what is in the book but told me that the book is very incomplete. She would love to have seen more images and descriptions of different changes in women's fashion that were not covered.

Fascinating book.

Great descriptions of the fashions and trends from the tudor period onwards. Some of the dresses shown have interesting back stories. I didn't study textiles or fashion but find it really interesting, especially as I like making my own clothes. This filled in some gaps in my education. Clear details with the terminology demystified. Lots of inspiration too. Fantastic photographs. I quite happily read it cover to cover.

The tiny writing ruined it for me I'm afraid. Became tedious to browse and really enjoy. Info is nice though

I love it!! So, so helpful for my coursework, it has helped me learn so many interesting details about fashion history. The writing is broken up every few pages with annotated examples of costumes/dresses that illustrate the information detailed before. Cannot recommend enough!

Fun, easy too read but just not enough pages

This book could have many hundreds more examples, but it's quirky, easy to read with plenty of photos. Liked it very much.
