Cruel circumstances tore them apart, and four years later, the sweet memory of their time together is dissolving under the punishing reality of Jo’s life now. Evan seems like a fading dream…until he reappears at the moment she needs him most. Guided by Evan’s strange intuition, they flee her small Louisiana town, on the run from the police, and Jo begins to suspect there is something more to his sudden return than he admits.
Over twelve days across America’s heartland, deep secrets come to light, buried pasts are unearthed, and the line between dreams and reality is blurred as Evan and Jo fight to hold on to their soul-deep love, and discover that there is more than one way to save a life.
How to Save a Life is a complete second-chance STANDALONE novel with shades of the paranormal. It carries the characters from high school through to their early twenties. It is not YA; mature subject matter and sexual situations. TRIGGER WARNING: some domestic violence (on the page) and mentions of sexual abuse (off the page) For readers 18 years and up.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This story enchanted me, held me in its protective arms (even through the scary parts) while I cheered for them right to the very end!!--Maryse's Book Blog
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I think this book is a dedication to all of us who are just a little different in our own way whether physical or emotional. Being different isn't a crime. You were all placed on this earth for a reason. You are beautiful. You are somebody important. You are significant and you deserve to be happy and to be loved. --AC Book Blog
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ You're in for a roller coaster of emotions and a story that will grip you from the beginning to the very end. This is a MUST READ...--Book Boyfriend Blog
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The author truly gives a VOICE to her characters. A voice to all the people that have always been shunned and told they don't matter. This story is for anyone that has been told they are insignificant. But the author demonstrates with her writing that we all matter. Our existence matters. And this big special world needs us.--BiblioBelles Book Blog
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I basically spent the first half nervously waiting for the expected to happen just not quite knowing what form the expected was actually going to take, that would then be the catalyst to set the wheels in motion for the second part of the story. I then spent the second half alternating between holding my breath and crying uncontrollably, whilst waiting for the inevitable but again unknown resolution to make itself apparent.--Claire, Top Goodreads Reviewer
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was blown away by its striking prose and unique storyline from the get-go, and in no time at all, I became so emotionally invested in its two leading characters, that their every high and low became my own. A beautiful read, one I will forever cherish and recommend unreservedly.--Natasha is a Book Junkie
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Emma delivers a truly unique story that is equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming. Her writing is absolutely flawless, and she does an incredible job bringing the characters to life and making you feel like you're a part of their world. You'll experience all the highs and lows as if they were your own. There are enough twists in the story to keep you completely captivated, and on the edge of your seat. --Maria's Book Blog

From the moment I heard about this book, I knew I wanted to read it. The unique sound of the story grabbed my attention and made me desperate to find out more. It honestly felt like the story came alive in my mind as I read. All the emotions were portrayed so vividly. That intense *pull* between the hero and heroine… the spark… the pain… the longing… the secrets… it was all there in the perfect balance. And the more I read, the more invested I became in the story.
Jo was such a compelling heroine. Emotionally scarred in the worst way and betrayed by an uncle she should have been able to trust, her life fell apart after she gathered the courage to speak out. Left without her parents, a scarred face, and no where to belong, she still wouldn’t allow herself to become the victim. Regaining control of her life in any way she could, she survived and she stayed strong.
But everything changed when she met Evan. The loner, the freak, the pariah of the school… but also a heart-stoppingly gorgeous guy who she felt drawn to and couldn’t stop thinking about. And the more she learned about this mysterious, misunderstood boy, the more she fell in love with him.
Evan is one of those guys who will straight up steal your heart forever. He was such an incredibly selfless, protective, kind-hearted person that it made my heart ache to see the kind of life he’d been forced to live. Given the pain in his life, seeing him fall in love with Jo was beautiful. It was just so right.
I especially appreciated just how functional they were as a couple. There was really no stupidity in this book and I respect the author so much for not using misunderstandings as a way to drive the story forward. Instead, the drama came from sources external to their relationship and you very much get the feeling that it’s all about them together against the world without ever questioning their love.
As the blurb says though, things don’t all go according to plan and they’re ripped away from each other at the worst possible time. That moment though right before when I could see this perfect future for them as a real possibility and it was like right there — I could almost reach out and touch it — but I knew things were going to get messed up and there was nothing I could do about it….. ahhhhhhhh THE ANGST!!!
When they were separated, it was heart-crushing. Especially with everything that happened after *sniff*. But the way he saved her brought ALL THE FEELS!!!!! I don’t want to say anything more but literally the way they find their way back to each other and the whole rest of the story kept me flipping those pages as fast as I could. I didn’t stop until the very end and let me tell you — the very last words of this book are absolutely perfect. My eyes filled with happy tears and I just sat there for a few minutes hugging my book and allowing all the amazing feels to just sink in. I didn’t want to let go. And I still don’t.
There is a tiny hint of paranormal in this book too. I wanted to quickly address it because I want you to know that this is not a paranormal romance per se, it just requires a tiny bit of suspension of belief. There’s no magic, no ghosts, no vampires, no tangible supernatural thing you have to accept. Rather, Evan just knows some seemingly inexplainable things that are essentially real. But that’s it. I honestly think even the most devout contemporary reader would have no problems accepting this story.
This is a standalone romance told primarily from her POV, although there are also several chapters from his POV as well. And, I’d consider it somewhere between New Adult and Adult in terms of steam levels. The love scenes are hot and yet beautifully passionate — focusing just as much on the emotional connection as the physical one.
Gah. I FELT THIS BOOK. The writing was so strong that it kept me totally in the story at all times. Real true confession here: I cancelled dinner out with my husband (at a really tasty restaurant too!) just so that I could finish reading this book. It was that good. I quite literally couldn’t put it down.
This book has it all. It’s passionate and intense, it’s heart-breaking and hopeful, it’s captivating and addictive, it’s beautifully written, and it leaves you with the powerful and uplifting message to never ever give up on true love. I highly recommend it for everyone!!!
“I’ll always come back to you.”
Rating: 5 stars! Standalone romance.
The beginning of the book had me worried, not because of any flaws, but because it's been a very long time since I've been in high school and my experiences there were primarily traumatic. Furthermore, I'm not really interested in how love is seen by people at that age. Twenty-plus years of distance from my own experiences in high school leave me feeling somewhat embarrassed by my own ideas about love when I was young and running through it again, even through the eyes of others, was cringe-inducing. Nonetheless, it was completely necessary in setting up the second half of the novel, which kept me turning pages far into the night. Don't get me wrong, the characters in the second half of the novel are still young, the version of love portrayed is still idealistic, it's just more tolerably so. After all, idealistic love is the love we all hunger to experience. It is intoxicating and scary and I can see why readers tear through romance books like addicts.
What kept me reading wasn't the sex scenes (although they're very well done!), it was the investment in the characters that was built in the first half of the book and the need to see them prevail. I'm somewhat familiar with the tropes of the genre (more by description than by direct experience), but the author still made me worry like crazy about them! In a way, Ethan is just a little bit too good to be true, and seeing him described the way he is gives a lot of insight into what a woman wants to see when she looks at a man - not just physically, but tempermentally. There's nothing wrong with that, but it works as a funny sort of mirror in which to examine my own ideas about what an 'ideal' woman is. I think it's problematic that both a physical imperfection and a tendency toward promiscuity are used by the main character to validate her own low opinion of herself, but I don't reject them outright. It was a valuable opportunity to see how a woman might filter her own opinions of herself through an omnipresent male gaze, and the author pushes back at them from time to time. I'd love to see the author push back at them a little harder than she does in some future work, but I think that doing so would transgress against the bounds of the genre. Personally, I'd be thrilled to see that book and I'm confident that the author could do it justice, but I understand that doing so would create something entirely different than a romance novel.
The author goes a long way toward describing the flaws in the female protagonist, but the idealized male object of her affection doesn't get the same treatment, not even in those parts of the novel that are written from his point of view. Again, I think this is typical for the genre, and perhaps it's the female mirror of the 'manic pixie dream girl' that one often sees in male portrayals of love. Still, I think that Ethan gets short shrift and he loses a bit of his humanity by being so darned perfect. He is exactly what Jo needs him to be, with few irritating edges to scuff up the beautiful glossy photo of the ideal man. He's strong, capable, protective without being abusive, and dead sexy. Somehow, his sensitive nature never expresses itself in any way that might irritate Jo or cause him to look weak. His use of violence is always justified and perfectly applied, even when it leads to negative consequences. His motivations outside of loving Jo are unclear. Contrasting this with Jo's own motivations, which extend beyond her need for Ethan, and he takes on a bit of a one-dimensional note.
So why five stars? Because the author made me care about these people so desperately! I was hooked. I wanted them - needed them - to prevail. In the end, I have to think that a romance novel HAS to do that, and do it well. Regardless of any criticism I may have about characterization, nothing about that diminished my need to keep turning the pages, eager to see how it would all turn out. The two notable jarring errors (Chevy makes the Malibu, not Ford. 'Meth' is short for 'methamphetamine', not 'methadone' and they are very different drugs) barely broke my stride. The characterization problems aren't nearly so glaring as many I've seen by more prominent authors, and truly, if romance isn't a safe place for a woman's idealized version of maleness, then what is?

Until she starts at her final school two months before she’s due to graduate, and meets Evan. The handsome teenage boy who has been dubbed the school freak.
The two are drawn to each other, and fall desperately in love in a short time. But they are ripped apart by awful circumstances before they have the chance to flourish.
Four years later, Jo is in a really bad place in her life. She’s never forgotten Evan, and he becomes her safe place in her mind. In her dreams. So when he shows up out of the blue, can he save her in reality?
What a beautiful, heart-rending, tragic story. Both Jo and Evan go through so much, it seems wholly unfair that two innocent, caring people should have to endure the pain and tragedy they do.
Jo frustrated me when she was all adamant about packing her own bags. You could see the outcome coming from a mile away! And yet she chose that one thing to be stubborn about.
I absolutely 𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙙 Evan’s adoptive brothers. Loathed. And his adoptive mother for turning a blind eye to it all. I mean why adopt him at all? He was 15 when they did and neither parent actually seemed to give a crap about him. I don’t get it. The only ray of light was Garrett. Just the sweetest little soul.
There are a lot of triggers in this book so definitely read the warnings first if you think you may be affected. It’s definitely heavy content. But I feel it’s written so beautifully. I’m such a sucker for the child (or even adult) that has never known love, even from a parent or friend. Loneliness is a horrible thing and my heart just weeps for the characters.

Evan & Jo have suffered so much already, each carrying their own pain, scars & demons as they try to manure life. Circumstances throw them together & thus starts their tremendous journey, so full of acceptance, deep understanding & the belief that maybe, just maybe they can & will save each other.
The story for me was unique & I found myself captivated by Evan - the boy & the man. Equally I loved watching Jo's role in the story develop & he she rose from the ashes to become a woman of so many beautiful strengths.
The emotions poured from the pages & touched me profoundly, and honestly at times I couldn't bare to think that there wouldn't be a HEA of the best kind. Loving this pair & all their uniqueness was so easy & effortless. Emma has once again gave me a story that will stay with me.

This book is a riot of emotions that just keeps your heart pounding and desperately wanting to know whats coming next.
I had no idea what this book was about and im so glad i went in this way as i could never imagine just how it would make me feel!
This book tells us the story of Jo who has a troubled childhood and when she moves to a new town with her uncle and struggles finding new friends at her new high school... one person who stands out to Jo is school "freak" Evan who is shunned or made fun of by everyone including his family and brothers who attend the same school... after being bullied until he snaps a fight and accident occurs changing Evans life forever although his life seems to be planned out in a way that he can not change and he follows all his instincts to lead him the right way.
This book has 3 parts and each one is just another part in their incredible journey just to be together... i have definitely found a new one click author in Emma Scott.

Jo is a tortured soul, her childhood experiences have left her traumatised and lacking in self worth, she seeks control in her own ways as she bounces from town to town with her guardian.
Evan is singled out as a freak because of his abilities, which some people find difficult to understand, he is tormented by his brothers on a daily basis and distances himself from people. The paranormal element is not overwhelming, but is important to the plot of the story.
There was a lot of holding my breath along with the characters in the second half of the story as they raced across country away from horrible situations toward freedom, without knowing if they could possibly find it under the circumstances.
Heart pounding read with a happy ending
