While its title makes it sound like a Peterson-style instructional manual, How to Save the West reads more like a tantalizing introduction to the great minds of old, and a reminder that we still have a lot to learn from their wisdom. Klavan continues the work of his excellent podcast Young Heretics by distilling the salient points of texts like the Republic of Plato and Aristotle's Ethics and placing them into context with modern philosophical issues. He encourages readers to think for themselves and seek out knowledge to better their own lives in trying times, and does so in an uplifting and optimistic manner.

Don't doubt yourself if you think this book is impenetrable and esoteric. Not so, and I'm proof, because I have a technical education and never studied the great works and ancient civilizations. Watchiung Jeopardy, I generally knew the answers to scientific and contemporary questions, but could never ring the buzzer on the subject matter in Spencer Klavan's book.

Fear not, my friend. This book is approachable, well written, easy to understand, and filled with wisdom that literally will make you "smarter".
