Full disclosure--I dislike the Smiths, and my opinion about Morrissey is probably not printable in an Amazon review. Having said that, "How Soon Is Now" is their superb, awesome, deep, biting, insightful, and heartfelt single; it's like someone warped this song from an alternate universe where the Smiths are actually a good band.
Tasty stuttered bassline? Check...
Tense guitar incidentals? Check...
Morrissey singing on key? Well... okay, check...
Why 4 stars instead of 5 you ask? Because Morrissey just can't help himself with the whiny, emo lyrics:
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
I'm sorry, but when your song is supposed to be a cri de coeur, your lyrics shouldn't be so silly that I almost want to giggle when I hear them.
WARNING! The rest of the Smiths' music is an acquired taste; don't buy this awesome song then get the rest of the album thinking you'll get more of the same--you won't. In fact, MANY MANY people who like this song generally don't like the rest of the Smiths' work. Preview the album if you are tempted to buy it from the strength of this song.
