This book was just what I was looking for. I have been researching starting a home based bakery for a few months now and this book really helped me. It brought up things that I did not think about and elaborated on things I had questions about. But I would suggest reading, as a companion book from the same series, HOW TO START A HOME BASED BUSINESS by Bert Holtje & Susan Shelly. It is the more technical side of starting any home based business. The two together are the perfect combination.

This was the fourth book I read on the subject of creating a home based baking business, so I already knew a lot of the information in the book. I skipped over most of the "how to start" stuff and read more into ideas for marketing, promotion, reviews of other business owners (very helpful) and her own opinion and experiences starting a business. There are always different things you can learn from someone else's experience that were not mentioned in other books.

This book is not fun. There are fun ways to write a book about starting a business, this is not one of them. Secondly this book has a lot of information specific to North Carolina and the US and isn't really relevant to other regions although, to be fair, it may still prompt you to think about it. This book is better suited to a baker who perhaps wants to do a full-time business. A small time baker who wants to start at home selling cakes in a market isn't really going to be interested in product recalls, she would have been better off going through types of bread packaging and baking equipment, ovens and thermometers, stuff EVERY baker needs no matter how large or small their venture.

I gave this book three stars because although it has given me some good ideas it's been a chore to read and I've not really gleaned more information than I had before I read it. To be honest, a generic business book and a recipe book would do the same thing! This book is for someone who is absolutely clueless, in which case, you probably shouldn't be starting any business let alone a bakery one...
