Editorial Reviews
Review
"The Concept Maps work effectively to give students "advanced organizers," of the chapter ahead; I point out the concept maps early in the semester and we discuss the ways in which they can be used as a survey tool and, later, as a review tool (because the arrows visually link up the topics in a chapter and because the student can quickly find something to revisit for increased clarification and review)."

The best part of this book is that it trains you to ask questions about the main topic of paragraphs by demonstrating how to do it. Literally 95% of the paragraphs of the book have questions in the left margin as a demonstration of how to do it. The other 5% of the paragraphs prompt you to do your own. This process is perfect for learning the material. And it provides the input needed to formulate that learning into Anki cards to remember what you've learned. I will definitely be using many of the techniques that I have learned in this book. But buy used due to over pricing by the publisher.
I work with MANY college students to whom I have imparted Walter Pauk's sage advice for years! Part of the value I found (and still find) in the book are wonderful notations I made IN the book while I was reading it - a technique Pauk instructs and reinforces in the text. Students need that "active learning" for this text-engagement to be meaningful. Therefore, "renting" this book is ludicrous!! I still find value in returning to my old notes and thoughts 30+ years later!
Most alarming though is the simple fact that my students who often need this wisdom and active learning the most are totally not capable of dishing out $110+ for a "How to" book. These students are barely able to make tuition payments!!!!
Come on, Cengage....cut these students a break and get this book into the hands (and minds) of those who need it most!!!!!
In the meantime....folks, the 2nd edition (my old reliable) is available to purchase here on Amazon for less than a buck. ;-)
P.s. I am buying another one.
