"There is no textbook as comprehensive as the Pauk [How to Study in College] textbook! I urge students to buy the book as they would a dictionary or thesaurus AND especially if they plan to transfer. The added content that is now available electronically is perfect because there are times I have to teach this class as an independent study - due to low enrollment - and this is perfect for those students."
"The Concept Maps work effectively to give students "advanced organizers," of the chapter ahead; I point out the concept maps early in the semester and we discuss the ways in which they can be used as a survey tool and, later, as a review tool (because the arrows visually link up the topics in a chapter and because the student can quickly find something to revisit for increased clarification and review)."
About the Author
A true pioneer in the field of study skills, Dr. Walter Pauk has been dispensing common-sense advice to students for more than half a century. Pauk led the way in advocating the now popular wide margin note-taking strategy commonly known as the Cornell System. A licensed psychologist and trusted teacher, Pauk was director of the Reading-Study Center at Cornell University, where he earned his PhD in Psychology and Education and remains Professor Emeritus. He is the author of more than 100 books.

P.s. I am buying another one.
I found that the publisher restricted the 7-day offer delivery to only my Android device.
I also found that the publisher also restricted the electronic delivery options for immediate purchase as well.
Not sure why I could not deliver to my Kindle cloud reader or brand-new Kindle Paperwhite or ipad.
Price - very high for a book that is revision of a book from 1962, also very high considerting that this is just an image of the book, not designed for publishing to Kindle format.
Delivery format - It is surely a mistake that the publisher would accept my $200 to delivery 2 copies to my android, or Kindle HD, but not my Kindle Paperwhite or ipad or iphone or Kinlle Cloud Reader.
Is drives me nuts when I am willing to overpay for very inexpensive media/delivery (Internet download), but the publisher cannot figure out how setup a simple catalog correctly.
I will look for a used hardcopy from elsewhere. I love Amazon, but this publisher has erected a big roadblock preventing me from being their customer today.
I would consider it a must read for anyone entering college or in college and needing some effective study methods.
I echo the sentiments of other reviewers. I don't recall this book being very costly in the early 90s.
I had wanted to include it as a suggested text for my college students, even though I teach biology.
At this cost it is hard for me to make this recommendation.
But had I not read this book and followed its methods, I probably would not have made it through college and earned the grades needed to now be a doctor.
I work with MANY college students to whom I have imparted Walter Pauk's sage advice for years! Part of the value I found (and still find) in the book are wonderful notations I made IN the book while I was reading it - a technique Pauk instructs and reinforces in the text. Students need that "active learning" for this text-engagement to be meaningful. Therefore, "renting" this book is ludicrous!! I still find value in returning to my old notes and thoughts 30+ years later!
Most alarming though is the simple fact that my students who often need this wisdom and active learning the most are totally not capable of dishing out $110+ for a "How to" book. These students are barely able to make tuition payments!!!!
Come on, Cengage....cut these students a break and get this book into the hands (and minds) of those who need it most!!!!!
In the meantime....folks, the 2nd edition (my old reliable) is available to purchase here on Amazon for less than a buck. ;-)
