Q & A with Author Robin Lee Hatcher
What made you decide to pick Boise for the setting of How Sweet It Is?
When I began writing Andrew and Helen’s story (in Who I Am with You), I pictured the apartment they lived in as newlyweds (1929) as on the same block as the Boise apartment where my aunt and uncle lived in the 1950s. So it just seemed natural to come full circle in How Sweet It Is and bring Jed and Holly to that same location.
What was your inspiration for the Legacy of Faith series?
In 2017, I was reading my well-loved Bible (the one I’ve used since 1997) which is full of highlights and many notes and dates in the margins. Suddenly I wondered what this Bible might mean to members of my family after I'm gone. Will one of my daughters or grandchildren or great-grandchildren one day leaf through this book and hear God speaking to them because of something I wrote therein? This sparked the idea for a series where an ancestor’s Bible would touch the lives of those who hadn’t known him.
How did you thread the stories together from book to book?
The thread that runs through all three books is the story of Andrew Henning and his family. Andrew is a man of deep and real faith, and it’s the notes he leaves in his Bible that make a difference in the lives of his great- and great-great-grandchildren who come into possession of it. In Who I Am with You, readers get to know Andrew and his family during the Great Depression. In Cross My Heart, they see Andrew and his family during WWII. And finally, in How Sweet It Is, Andrew and Helen are alone on the farm in 1969 with their children all grown with families of their own.
What should a reader expect from How Sweet It Is?
First, readers should expect a sweet romance at the center of the story. I enjoy writing about two people who don’t want to fall in love but who fall in love anyway. Second and most important, I pray that the stories told in this series (and in all of my novels) will bring my readers one step closer to God.
The Legacy of Faith Series
This series explores the difficulties in finding and keeping faith, along with its rewards.
