It was okay, didn't go in depth on training.

We've had hunting dogs before, but we are training our first field trial dog. I found the time-line for training very helpful. You can skip over the parts of the book that don't apply to you and I'm not sure how useful the chapter on game is since it was written in 1984, but other than that the book is excellent.

How To Train Your Own Gun Dog is useful for beginners, and probably less so for experienced hunters. It provides good guidance on which breeds are appropriate for each type of game. It also has a clear timeline for training progress.
It may try to do too much in one book. For example, it includes separate sections for pointing dogs, spaniels, and retrievers. If you do not yet have a dog, this info is helpful. Otherwise, about half of the book is not pertinent to you.
