There are many books out there that offer deeper looks at specific types of complementary and holistic medicine. This book was written to encompass many of the different avenues available to the person searching for healing. The reader needs to understand that is is a reference book and compilation of alternative therapies that exist. Google searches will bring anyone to National Resources and other information storehouses that contain "CAM' modalities at a glance. This book is less a true map for health and more of a resource or reference for the reader. There are no clear directions to follow in any order - just subsections of the body, mind and spirit. Some of the CAMs mentioned are pretty far out, a little something for everyone. Surprisingly, no mention of Cannabis as an alternative therapy for neuropathic pain, Cancer, nausea, appetite?
The book is loaded with text snippets of modalities from Alexander Technique to Zentherapy. On a personal note, if I was desperate for healing and searching for a fix, I might be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information along with the lack of any depth. I appreciate that the author opens the book with a disclaimer regarding no intention to diagnose or prescribe any treatment. I was very appreciative of this.
The author is not a doctor and does not approach this book as such. He approaches it as a consumer who has done his research, experienced little help from Western medicine and wants to enlighten readers to an entire world of CAM. I guess my main caution if for the ailing person who is fighting cancer or something else and ignores what Western Medicine can bring to them in search of a remedy in this book. The search for a type of therapy could be longsuffering and costly.
This is a helpful book for people with ailments who can truly benefit from the placebo effect. For those with Cancer or other diseases that threaten life and psychological health and well-being looking for alternative therapies that go a bit more in-depth, tell a personal story and provide choices, I recommend Leigh Fortson's Embrace, Release, Heal: An Empowering Guide to Talking about, Thinking about, and Treating Cancer. It offers a similar approach but at a more in depth and personal level.
Please note: I was provided with a sample from the distributor in order to give an honest review.
As a reference work, this volume does not go into depth on any particular therapy; however, it is packed with websites that do go into more depth, so you're not left without additional resources.
Not all alternative therapies are included because new ones are appearing rapidly, but most of the therapies available today are discussed. You'll find some that have been around for years and others that are less well known or much newer.
Considering the volume of therapies in this book, just organizing them in a rational format must have been difficult. Smith uses the traditional "body, mind, spirit" approach, but I'd like to have had a comprehensive index by diagnosis so that you could focus on a specific problem and see all the therapies that have been used successfully for that problem.
Because this is a reference book, it's unlikely that you'll sit down and read through all the therapies contained within it; however, to get a feel for the variety and volume of alternative therapies available, this is the book you need.
If you have felt diminished confidence in traditional chemical-based medicine and want to try something with fewer side effects, start here. "How to UnBreak your Health" will provide you with many avenues to improve your health.
