This book tells you exactly how to achieve what the title says. It starts by introducing how the book came into existence then it gives a topic for each section about a problem people often face. Then a couple of chapters each section that gives one principle each. After the giving advice, he just talks about how it can be applied and examples for the rest of the chapter.

3.0 out of 5 starsMostly for the workplace, not how to have long lasting REAL friendships
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2013
Now, this book is not what I thought it would be. I thought this book was for people who just cannot communicate with people on a social level as in school or just out in the open. About making friends in general. Most of this book was about the workplace. Don't get me wrong, this book is pretty fantastic for the workplace. If you want a job, want a better job, want to be a good manager/leader, increase your connections, etc., this will help tremendously.

I started to get the hint when Carnegie most of the time brought up examples of tycoons and presidents, that this wasn't going to be a "How to make friends book". It starts off with the basic, say hello, say their names, pat them on the pat, eye contacting, and it goes on and on. Though I did find it amusing this one part where he suggested make time for people (which is very true when it comes to making friends), that he would just listen to a woman talk, and said he would pretend to be interested in what the woman was saying. I'm sure this falls into the workplace category and making an impression, as opposed to actually making a friend. If someone wanted to make a friend, why on earth would you pretend to be interested in what they are saying? Unless you are a guy trying to get into some woman's pants (or vice versa). Then he mentions how he took the time to talk to a boss for about an hour about his dog, and just listened. Then the boss gave him a free dog, or an offer to get a free dog. Then he says, "See look! I got something free just for listening to this rich guy for 1-2 hours!". He was showing that making time for others can be beneficial. Yeah well, I don't want peoples assets, I would like their FRIENDSHIP. Things like this, I just did not like in the book. I don't want to be fake.

The book however is well written. It's a bit repetitive though. Carnegie has a LOT of examples that are well written out from start to finish. But it can be a bit boring when you already understand what he's saying, and then you find out you still have some pages to go about something he's has already explained enough about.

This book is also NOT for the introverted or shy. I know this is the last thing the author may have thought about, but just to put this book in a different light, this is not for the ones who don't want to put themselves out there. First you have to evaluate your own self and be comfortable with yourself, as well as be confident. If you are not, read books about self-esteem, confidence, shyness, etc first before diving into this book IF you want to have a successful BUSINESS and be a good boss or leader.

Honestly to sum up this book : Be good to people, make time for them, ask questions and suggest things that would benefit another person rather than criticizing, do not insult others, smile, remember names, pretend to be interested in people (unless you really like them I guess).

When I get a job in the corporate world, I would definitely try to read this book again. Though his bold words at the end of each chapter, pretty much sum up what he says. He just has a lot of examples to show how effective his advice is.

This book is more for Workplace friends... the people you go to when you need a favor, then you don't talk to them until you need another favor!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE: "Updated For The Next Generation of Leaders" 2022 Edition!!!

𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 "𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐗𝐓 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒" 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟏 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝟓 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝟓.

"How To Win Friends and Influence People" was the first personal development book I ever read. Being a depressed, lonely, 12 year old child I came across this book by accident at my local library. I was searching the computer's library catalog: "how to get friends", and this was the book that came up. Little did I know this book was going to become an essential for me in developing my social skills.

At first glance, you may read the principles taught in this book and go: "this is just common sense". But you may also have heard the quote "common sense isn't common". How many of us actively make an effort to genuinely smile and be empathetic towards others? How may of us jump to criticizing others without considering the other person's point of view? How many of us condemn others without remembering it won't make the other person change their mind?

I've read this book so many times I've lost count! It really changed my life, and I was so excited to see it be re-released for a new generation!

That said, the book edition of my youth was from the 1990's. How does this 2022 "Updated for the Next Generation of Leaders" edition hold up? I compared the 2 side-by-side.

PROS:
📌 Grammar revisions make the book easier to read. Examples include removal of filler words, word substitutions, and rewriting story examples. The changes are minor, so most of the time they are not very noticeable.
📌 A few new story examples have been added, featuring female figures like Evangeline Booth and Alice Foote MacDougall.
📌 A new concluding section: "Apply the Dale Carnegie Principles After the Book"

CONS:
📌 Lots of book edits come off less as necessary and more as attempts to be politically correct, to remove anything that could be seen as problematic. Examples include substituting words ("they" for "him", "not be able to walk" for "cripple", "house staff" for "servants") and stories that were needlessly removed (which leads to my next point).
📌 SO MANY story examples have been removed; no joke, I counted over 35! So many vivid examples that made the book so memorable for me as a kid, PC or not, are gone! I don't care if the story examples used Confederate general Robert E. Lee; they still illustrated the principles.
📌 Some edits just don't make sense at all. For example, they renamed Part 3, Chapter 5 from "The Secret of Socrates" to the principle "Get the Other Person Saying 'Yes, Yes' Immediately". No other chapter was renamed like this, and the Socrates example is still in the chapter.

As for the audiobook, the narrator gives a great presentation with a good range. But will his voice ever match the baritone of the original Andrew MacMillan? Unfortunately no.

In sum, for those who are new to reading this book or were born past the 2000's, I'd say this 2022 edition is a nice introduction, albeit a very sanitized one. There's a longer and better version out there. But if you're already a fan of the 90's publication and could care less about political correctness, there's not much new here to justify a second purchase. In fact, there's much less!

Sadly, this isn't the only book lately that's getting the Orwellian treatment. Other authors whose books have been altered lately for offensive content include Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming, Agatha Christie, and R.L. Stine (not to mention he's still alive and did not approve the changes). Simply put, it's really getting out of hand!

Consider me an old fashioned 30 year old Millennial, but I'll be sticking with my original copy.

I've read several books on this topic, and this one is probably the moat basic, which makes it easier to actually implement in the real life. Knowing that is written a long time ago gives it even more credibility.

I learned to shut up and allow my wife to talk. I took her to dinner and tested this. Everytime she would pause and expect me to say something, or when I would usually say something I didn't. So she spilled all of her feelings to me that ive never heard and we had 4 hours of beautiful conversation. Both husband and wife, try this even if you disagree just nod your head so they know you're listening.

This is an extremely powerful book. If taken seriously, it can transform the way you view each and every social interaction with another living being. A couple of points:

1st: The thing is, if not careful, this book can quickly turn into 'How to manipulate others, have it backfire, and be miserable." Friendships are two way streets, this book only shows you your way. Don't get upset when you're putting in your half, gain a friend, and realize your new friend isn't a very nice one. Making friends is a marathon, not a sprint. But I know most of the personalities who pick up this book hold the idea that it's a friendship cookbook of some sort.

2nd: There's a reason why some people are born with the gift of being extremely likable, and why others read about it. Some people LIKE other people with all of their goodness and their baggage. Once they make friends, they keep them, no resentment, no expectations of the other person, and no trying to change them. Those of us who have to read this book to become likable, unfortunately inevitably end up falling into one of these last groups, and then grow angry with our new friends, ourselves for befriending these people, and with the book for putting us in this position.

3rd: The book tells you in the beginning how it's really not a quick read, and if you really want to learn, it isn't. You should take it in, and ponder ways on how to apply these lessons to your life. I was whole-heartedly planning on reading this in 2-3 days maximum. Then I realized every page and example had a profound effect on me. I had to stop and absorb all of the information, apply it to a lot of my previous, present, and future relationships with people. I recommend it to anyone willing to take it serious, and if not, I'd recommend it to anyone simply because it's an all-time favorite.

4th: As for influencing people...it's an art. We cannot read one cook-book and think we're chefs, nor can we read this book and think we are the masters of social interaction. Once you make friends, you will face hardships regardless of how likable you are. This is not a step-by-step manual on how to deal with these hardships, moreso a variety of tactics to help manage these difficult situations. It's up to you determine WHEN and HOW to apply them. Every situation is different, and you must execute this advice with tact, class, and poise.

Last note: lead by example (saved you 25% of the book). You cannot and will not get anyone to do anything that you yourself can't or won't do. People are spontaneous, and unpredictable; some people are angry, disloyal, vengeful, and traumatized, this advice is more likely to help in these cases, but they are not bulletproof. Having yourself as a backup plan never fails, be your own best friend during these times. It's the key to your happiness.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Dale makes an emphasis that when using his advice, your words and actions should be meaningful, thus leaving you with at least the peace of mind that you're not being fake, even if you end up making a whole bunch of friends that aren't so nice. I purchased the kindle version of this book, but will definitely by a physical copy for my library as well!

This book really changed my life. I used in my business, in my relationship with other people, in communication and generally everywhere.
One time is not enough to read that book. It is full of really stories and except for the valueable part of the boo, it is so fun to read it.
I have no exactly words to use for how transform my life.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Guide to Developing People Skills in Your Professional and Daily Life
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021

First published in 1936, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is filled with advice that has stood the test of time. Technology continues to progress, but the human heart remains the same.

If you've ever wondered about what it would be like to get along with nearly everyone, this book will answer that question better than any other. The information that will help you develop excellent people skills, grew out of curiosity, experiments and research. So you could say it is even scientific.

After reading three or more different versions of this book, including the one for the digital age and updated versions, I must say that I think this first version is my favorite.

I still however continue to disagree with the advice to not let someone know when they have a source of a quote wrong. People have corrected me in the past and I've appreciated them helping me out! The quote in this book about nothing being good or bad - that it is your thinking that makes it so - is deceptively wrong. People know the difference between good and evil things. And Socrates saying he knew nothing...how did he know that then?

Otherwise I agree with everything else in this brilliant study on human nature. I have been testing out the advice in this book this week and wish more people would read this book and take it seriously when talking and dealing with me. I apparently am not so different than the regular human who enjoys a bit of appreciation and recognition. You will find you really relate to this book in dozens of ways. Read this book to find out how to get along with more people and to figure out what really makes you tick or ticks you off!
