HOW TO WORK FOR A JERK saved my job, and maybe my career. Bottom line, your boss is probably a jerk, but he is still the boss. He can fire you, or otherwise make your life miserable, so you have to figure out how to get along with him. This book tells you how to do that, and how to be a survivor when the cutbacks come. If you have ALREADY been fired, this book will help you keep your next job. I have loaned my copy so many times that I finally bought a spare. This should be REQUIRED READING in high school and college, instead of the worthless junk they assign now.

I got this book on the recommendation from a friend, due to some issues that I was having at work with a manager. I was not really able to change the situation greatly, it did help me understand the mind set and goals of that particular manager.

It's such a shame that this book is relatively unknown as the wisdom and techniques contained within, plus the wonderful humour makes it one that can be read time and time again.

Sometimes I pick it up just for a laugh, but the advise contained within the pages are so spot on that everyone should have a copy.

The book cuts through the myths of management and human resources, and explains exactly the type of bosses that are out there, and the techniques for identifying them, and dealing with them.

I read it back in 1988, and have been applying the techniques ever since.

Basic premise is: The guy you work for may be a jerk, but there are things you can do to make him want to keep you around, while furthering your own career.

The author has a wealth of experience to draw from and seems to have encountered all of the different types of bosses.

If you can get a copy, then do so. For pure entertainment value, it's more than worth it.

This book does a great job of poking holes in all the things you get told by HR types and prepares you to translate things you are being told about your career and how to get along. I was given a copy during a rough patch many years ago and found the exact situation among the examples. I have since made a habit of finding old copies to give as gifts at college graduations and to interns as they have left my tuteledge and gone on to other positions.

I always warn them not to keep it on the bookshelf in their office at work.
