How to Write Funnier: Book Two of Your Serious Step-by-Step Blueprint for Creating Incredibly, Irresistibly, Successfully Hilarious Writing (How to Write Funny 2) Kindle Edition
Learn How to Write a Funny Story
Can you learn how to write comedy? Absolutely—anyone can.
Scott Dikkers will tell you how. He’s co-founder and longest-serving editor-in-chief of The Onion, the world’s most popular humor publication, and founder of The Onion Training Center at the Second City in Chicago. He’s also a #1 best-selling humor author and winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor.
In How to Write Funnier, he tells you everything you need to know to start writing funny stories, how to write funny scenes, and how to write funny sketches.
But that’s just the beginning. How do you get a job in comedy? How do you write for The Onion? How do you write for the New Yorker? How do you get published in McSweeney’s? How do you write for money? How do you become a career comedy writer?
It's all in How to Write Funnier, the followup to How to Write Funny.
Writers Scott has mentored, trained, or hired for their very first comedy-writing job have gone on to win several Emmy Awards, written movies nominated for an Academy Award, and become best-selling authors themselves.
One student said this about How to Write Funny (Book 1)
“This book is one of my very favorite books on comedy. It's helped me get published on satire sites like Reductress.com and helped me get admitted to comedy festivals. The fact that all comedy writers don't know about this book is (1) unfortunate but also (2) fantastic, because it will give the people who do read it a big advantage.”
How to Write Funnier gives you the step-by-step writing process professionals use for creating hilarious comedy articles, prose pieces, and stories that will jump off the page, grab readers by the sphincter and make them LOL, spit-take, make other passengers on the bus look at them like they’re crazy because they’re laughing so hard reading your story.
The first book in this series, How To Write Funny, showed you how to write a joke. How to Write Funnier (Book 2) shows you how to stack up those jokes the right way to make funny articles, stories, listicles or prose pieces that will make people remember you.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024So, after finishing BOOK 1, I felt the urgent need to get BOOK 2 and wasn't disappointed. Scott Dickers goes deeper into the science and practice of writing humor, and taking funny further and farther. Or, as he calls it, Funnier, in good dramatic progression. If you read BOOK 1, read it, as this stands on its shoulders and you may not see over the edge (or understand what the heck he's talking about). Then get into BOOK 2 and you will again not be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2019I really liked this book and definitely recommend it. I've read a few books by Scott Dikkers and they are all very good and informative. He seems to genuinely care about helping people become good comedy writers. He has a lot of experience and is generous with his comedy advice.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2019So you want to be a writer. Good for you. Common next question you ask yourself is "but HOW?" followed by frustration and procrastination. In this book, Dikkers provides a framework and tactical steps you can take to hone your craft and take it to the next level. This dispels any idea that mere talent can get you there--talent schmalent. Here's a road map to get on your way. A great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023love this book. best series of books on comedy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2019Scott Dikkers is my number one go to when it comes to learning how to write, produce, and deliver comedy. Founding editor of The Onion, he incorporates all the literacy devices we learned in our high school literature textbooks and makes them accessible so that comedy and wit become second nature. How to Write Funnier deconstructs what makes funny things, well... funny. He takes out all the guess work. Things are either funny or they’re not, and Dikkers’ offers an approach that combines understanding the mechanics of comedy writing with a flair for delivery, so that things are funny!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020I took a couple pages of notes on the theories presented in this book. But I’ll be coming back to the chapter showing multiple drafts of the same pieces repeatedly. It was so helpful to see the process of taking a first draft and making it funnier. (I had to show the fake lost dog posters to my roommates. So funny!)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2019If you want to improve your comedy writing, buy this book. This book is a step by step way to make your humor stand out. This book will help you improve your writing 100%.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020I did not know how much I did not know about humor writing. This is super helpful in that the author gives many examples as well as specific action steps. It's like I am taking a college course with a great professor.
