I've given these two decent tests -
- Mowing my lawn (takes about an hour)
- Chainsawing (much louder) - for about 3 hours
These are rated at 33 NRR, the 3m tek's are rated at 32 NRR. The different is fairly trivial.
I've have to say - these seem to block out noise decently better than the 3m Tekk's, not sure what it is, but things are just that much quieter. As far as the fit and comfort go - I can't say I have any complaints. I think the comfort is about the same as the Tekk's, but the fit in my ear canal seems better ( better shape I'd say ).
After several hours of chainsawing, the wear did not seem to hurt my ear canals or anything. I like the better protection than what I had before. I'll be buying these again.
UPDATE: After further use of these, I have a quick update.
I bought a pair of 3M Peltor X-Series Over-the-Head Earmuffs, NRR 27 dB to wear in conjunction with the earplugs for further noise reduction.
This gives me another way to compare. Compared to these (very good) earmuffs, the noise reduction is still noticeably superior on the Howard Leight earplugs (you should probably expect it since the NRR of earmuffs is 27). Just another perspective to compare with. I feel it is not uncommon for manufacturers to give numbers which don't really stack up to reality, so this is why I make this comparison.
Something very important to note is that each pair that comes in this box is individually wrapped. Which means that these are the best for travel.
RX Brand 3/5 - Cheaper material and cost the same as the better brands
Hearos 4/5 - worked for me, falls out more than the MAX1 (smaller) and more expensive
MAX1 4.5/5 - The best quality ear plug that I have used and also the cheapest
MAX1 USA 5/5 - You feel better putting the earplugs in. I am a guy and most things don't need things to look pretty, but when you are tired it is just better to use USA flag earplugs compared to the normal. Even if you are some psycho who hates this country, the earplugs look sharper than the plain MAX1s. You think I am dumb, but a a week or after using the MAX1 USAs you will be happy with your purchase. They probably make sure they do a better job with the MAX1 USA than just the MAX1.
My husband snores like a chainsaw that needs a tuneup. I have tried almost every brand available in the USA, and every NRR level - finally found the Howard Leight MAX NRR 33 ear plugs and have never bought anything else since. I've been using this specific earplug for at least 5 years now. Every night without exception - this item works so well at cutting noise that even if I'm not near my snoring husband I can't sleep without them! I've never been a light sleeper, but these plugs are so great it's conditioned me to be very sensitive to noises, any kind, no matter how quiet. I take these with me everywhere I go.
The only issue I've ever experienced is when I have to use them more than twice in a 24-hour period - if I take a nap earlier in the day (or am traveling and use them on a flight) I find that my ears are sensitive to the rubber (or whatever material they're made out of) and they get a little sore. Just using them once a day/night I've never experienced any issue. If I know I need to use them more than once in a 24-hour period I put just a tiny drop of lotion (I use Eucerin) on them before inserting and it prevents any abrasion on the skin in my ears. I also find that I can reuse the plugs many times before having to dispose of them.
I REALLY recommend this product for noise reduction - whether sleeping or working or playing with loud stuff - it really works and is very inexpensive for the benefits you receive. They're also about $10 cheaper from Amazon than any other retailer, anywhere, for the same exact item.
