Rock stars and rap gods. Comedy legends and A-list actors. Supermodels and centerfolds. Moguls and mobsters. A president.

Over his unrivaled four-decade career in radio, Howard Stern has interviewed thousands of personalities—discussing sex, relationships, money, fame, spirituality, and success with the boldest of bold-faced names. But which interviews are his favorites? It’s one of the questions he gets asked most frequently.
Howard Stern Comes Again delivers his answer.

This book is a feast of conversation and more, as between the lines Stern offers his definitive autobiography—a magnum opus of confession and personal exploration. Tracy Morgan opens up about his near-fatal car crash. Lady Gaga divulges her history with cocaine. Madonna reminisces on her relationship with Tupac Shakur. Bill Murray waxes philosophical on the purpose of life. Jerry Seinfeld offers a master class on comedy. Harvey Weinstein denies the existence of the so-called casting couch. An impressive array of creative visionaries weigh in on what Stern calls “the climb”—the stories of how they struggled and eventually prevailed. As he writes in the introduction, “If you’re having trouble finding motivation in life and you’re looking for that extra kick in the ass, you will find it in these pages.”

Interspersed throughout are rare selections from the
Howard Stern Show archives with Donald Trump that depict his own climb: transforming from Manhattan tabloid fixture to reality TV star to president of the United States. Stern also tells of his Moby Dick-like quest to land an interview with Hillary Clinton in the run-up to the 2016 election—one of many newly written revelations from the author. He speaks with extraordinary candor about a variety of subjects, including his overwhelming insecurity early in his career, his revolutionary move from terrestrial radio to SiriusXM, and his belief in the power of psychotherapy.

As Stern insightfully notes in the introduction: “The interviews collected here represent my best work and show my personal evolution. But they don’t just show
my evolution. Gathered together like this, they show the evolution of popular culture over the past quarter century.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[A] hefty all-star tutorial on the art of the interview… It’s the intimacy Stern establishes with his subjects that makes this collection worthwhile.”

—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Stern’s decades in radio have unquestionably honed in him the near-mystical ability to get a guest talking freely, which is much, much harder than it looks. Even stripped of his voice — a velvety purr that remains one of the great radio voices — the interviews have palpable chemistry…[The ones] with comedians and talk show hosts, it seems to me, are especially fine. Collectively they serve as an oral history of contemporary comedy in America…More important, the book implicitly raises thorny questions about responsibility, agency and forgiveness, especially in the context of #MeToo and its fraught narratives of personal downfall and potential redemption…These matters are ineluctably complex and subjective, and in this, at least,
Howard Stern Comes Again is perfectly of its time.”

—Michael Lindgren, The Washington Post

“[Stern] wrote lively introductions for each interview. He also composed an introduction that is detailed and charming, autobiographical but also self-reflectively honest…It is, on a number of levels, a terrific book. Only two of its interviews (one with Trump and another with Ozzy Osbourne) are from the pre-Sirius era, when his obsession with ratings combined with his self-absorption ‘didn’t lend itself to doing serious interviews.’ They are, as you will read, serious now. He deeply researches all of his guests and he is able to get honest emotions and genuine insights from most of them. Yes, his radio shows can still dip into tawdry territory and he remains wildly funny and provocative. His interviews sparkle.”

—Rick Kogan, The Chicago Tribune

“What
Howard Stern Comes Again underscores for those who might only view him as the prurient Pied Piper of his early career is his evolution from self-absorbed, mean-spirited attack dog to a thoughtful enquirer with genuine interest in his interview subjects. That the book is a gorgeous compendium – a bit like a mini-coffee table construct – is testament to Stern’s seriousness about the topic…Even though “Howard Stern Comes Again” emphasizes the guests who have sunk into Stern’s studio couch, his voice is always prominent as a narrator and guide through these engrossing dives into the lives of others…[R]eading these interviews instead of hearing them in their natural habitat elevates the process to a different level of engagement – wanting to guess and hope what Stern will ask next (and this is a guy who isn’t afraid to delve).”

—Melissa Ruggieri, Atlanta Journal Constitution

“The real story isn’t about how Howard Stern had changed; it’s about how he helped
us change, making American culture a kinder and more soulful place by displaying the same passionate commitment to truth-telling that once burned brightly in the old Hebrew prophets…The prophets have always lived among the people they sought to sway back toward righteousness. Comport yourself as my moral and intellectual better, and I’ll either shrug my shoulders and ignore you or contemplate giving you the finger; speak to me like an equal, and I’ll listen. Stern the equalizer is on display on every page of his terrific new book. The move from audio to print does nothing to rob his conversations with the mighty—Madonna and Colbert, Paul McCartney and Joan Rivers, Amy Schumer and Donald Trump—of their energy and intimacy. Instead, they now read like a hopeful historical transcript, a steady stream of irrefutable grace amid an increasingly barren cultural terrain.”

—Liel Leibovitz, Tablet Magazine

Howard Stern Comes Again is proof that radio’s bad boy has finally reached adulthood. The King of All Media rose to the top of his field by triggering fights, recruiting unstable regulars and poking at guests. But this collection of celebrity interviews, most of which were conducted on his satellite radio show during the past five years, shows off Stern’s skills as a journalist tapping into his innate sense of curiosity and deep well of compassion…It’s hard to imagine many other personalities convincing Jon Stewart to open up about his split with his father, Michael J. Fox to detail his battle with alcoholism or Gwyneth Paltrow to relive her romance with Brad Pitt, but Stern makes the revelations seem like casual conversations over brunch. There’s a heavy focus on his interviews with fellow talk show hosts—David Letterman, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill O’Reilly and Conan O’Brien all made the cut—but it’s a kick tracking how his peers react to being on the other side of the microphone.”

—Neal Justin, The Star Tribune

Howard Apologizing for Years of Awesome Radio
Or: How Howard Rewrites HistoryFirst of all, I'm still a huge fan. I still enjoy the show for what it is, and it's fine. I'm okay with his new format, but I do wish he would quit making up lies about his history. Don't apologize for it Howard! The fact that he is apologizing for it so much and rewriting history here in this book seems like this is an attempt to get ahead of any old tapes that might appear where there was VERY racist talk back in 1990-1991 in particular, including him in black face multiple times on the channel 9 show. But then comes this.. he says that the Wilmer Valderrama led to nothing, that it "wasn't good radio". Are you kidding me? Is this now also going to be edited out of show history? C'mon Howard.. you can't actually believe that. This book makes it seem like he went to satellite and all was changed when really that only started about 5 or 6 years ago. Again, I'm still a huge fan, but Howard ignores the fact that people are listening and it's disappointing when he goes and contradicts himself. I mean, he said the book was interviews, but I definitely expected more than 17 pages of the autobiographical part. The interviews... they're alright. This book would be great on a plane, but it's kind of a sad experience when you lie down for bed and you have hundreds of pages of material you've heard before, but now it's edited in such a way that Howard has picked parts that make him a hero or shine a light on him in the best way possible. This is truly Howard seeking acceptance from everyone who never accepted him before. It betrays the people who love him, not just because it comes across as try-hard, but it's also very disingenuous and alters well-known history. The promotion leading to the tour had him doing The Name Game song to show he is PG.. the lady on the View called him out on using racial slurs back in the 90's and he blamed that on Daniel Carver. Where are the sessions with Gilbert where Gilbert would do the Amos and Andy style voices throughout the show? Knowing the way the show has been will alter your ability to enjoy the book. Also, those 17 pages of new material is old material. Almost all of it is stuff he talks about daily or weekly. To be fair, he did say (after the book came out) that the fans should not buy the book. WHAT?? That seems like an awful thing to say. "Hey I know you guys made me what I am today, and I know you even paid for premium radio, and I appreciate it, sure, but I'm going to write my long-awaited next book for those that never gave a crap about me". So lame. The actual writing is only okay, but Howard works best when free flowing his thoughts out of his mouth, not when he attempts to use a book format to manipulate the reader with carefully edited and red-edited sentences. Also, the book has "blurbs" in it, sentences chosen from that page but made large and at the corners of the pages. Why? Why am I going to read those when they are on that page? I'd either be reading ahead on something I'm about 30 seconds from reading on my own, or I'm done with the page and I'm going to for some reason go back and read that part again?? Is it for the person at the bookstore who flips through it so they can see something interesting and it will help them decide to buy it?? That's what it is, isn't it? That's just rude. Get your advertising out of the main book I bought!Sorry Howard, but you have to know that this is a big let down to the core of your audience, even someone like myself who doesn't think of you as "Hollywood" now or gets upset with the negative way the so-called fans act online. I'm one of the biggest fans of yours still, but this is why I can only give you one star for how disappointing the book turned out to be.

A bit of history. I used to really be into Stern. I loved his terrestrial radio show and read his first two books. Enjoyed it all. When he went to satellite, I did not follow because I felt I was growing beyond what he was doing. Many years later I got a trial to Sirius and caught his show. I forget who he was interviewing, but the interview was great and I realized: Stern evolved. I became a subscriber to Sirius because of him, and when I heard this book was coming out, I got excited. I even tweeted something to him, which one of his crew promptly tore into me for because they thought me saying Stern had always influenced my interview style was just me trying to ride his coattails. Then I started reading bad reviews of the book ... which all seemed to be from people like the cast member who tried to put me in my place. They were pissed that Stern had evolved and they had not. It was sad, honestly.

I got the book and loved it. Yes, these are interviews you may have heard before, but they are the best of the best, with introductions from Stern that are quite personal and honest. It gives context as to why the interviews he chose were included, and it paints the picture of a man who is trying to do more with his power. His cast members who are stuck in the old world are much like those fans in the same place. Stern realized he had to progress, and so he did. This book is proof. This is the book for people who say they hate Stern. Read a handful of the interviews presented, and you'll see what you've been missing. Sure, the goofy humor is still there, but these interviews are as good as they get.

And if you think Stern sold out, so be it. He's not going to change your mind and I don't think he's interested in doing so. This book exemplifies what he is proud of, and if, as a "fan," you can't handle that ... well, it really says more about you.

I wasn’t always a Howard Stern fan. He started to establish his fame on NY radio, and I heard bits and pieces of his shtick and thought not much of his antics. During the ‘90s, I did a 180 and began being a loyal listener of his morning show and watching him on E! I loved his book “Private Parts”, and even more the very underrated and well-made film that followed. I loved his nonsense with his cast of characters, like millions of others. One of the things I admired was that is radio persons was a “character”, but in his real life, he was a loyal husband and father, which I admired. When I heard of his marriage ending, I initially came to the conclusion that I had been. “Had” and he was more like his radio character after all. Time has revealed much, including that his personal life went a certain way, but he wasn’t disingenuous. He was trying to find himself and real contentment. As he left terrestrial radio and moved to Sirius, I became a subscriber because of him...but his show changed as he changed, relying much less on his old routines, and somewhat gradually and without me really noticing as it was happening, Howard Stern had become one of the greatest interviewers in history. Without the construction of broadcast time limits and content rules, and reflecting his own inner growth as a person, his insightful and provocative way of interviewing notable people from many areas of (for lack of a better word) “entertainment” has developed into something remarkable. He is able to make his interviewees open up and be more honest about themselves and their thoughts than one would think possible. This book contains wonderful excerpts from many of his best radio interviews and is a very quick read, which I’ve already read twice in full and even more returns for brief peeks at individual pieces here and there. If you are a Stern loyalist, you likely already have this book. If you are one who never took him seriously or even trashed him based on reputation vs. truth, test a sample. You’ll be amazed how fascinating this book is, not only as a reflection of Stern’s gifted ability to ask provocative questions but the candor of his interview subjects is refreshingly honest and impressive.

Is this a confession or a rationisation? Is he saying “Sorry”, “Sorry, but...” or “Look, you have to understand...”?

More than #MeToo has changed the showbiz landscape, and the culture generally, since Stern was in his K-ROCK height in the 1980s. To suggest, as I have just done, that it was downhill from there is a bold suggestion, but look at the evidence.

On conventional FM radio, he was the eternal goad, with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the proxy for every broadcasting and, by extension, cultural norm trying to rein him in. The excitement of listening to Stern was the thrill of gladiatorial combat: between the conventional and the daring; the uptight and the liberated.

    Ring a bell?

Yes, the good ol' Swinging Sixties, with its Dad Rock survivor re-staging the cultural wars of his youth and, this time, winning.

He insisted on bringing Hollywood's casting couch right into mainstream radio — proving, not incidentally, that the pictures are better there. But he was outré in far more areas than the sexual, and that's where the book runs into the sand or, more appropriately, the mire.

You see, where you might have spotted abuse — where Howard might have perpetrated abuse — he now sees only his own OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder); where you heard rude and exploitative, Howard now replays the tape as commercial pressures and those damned ratings books.

The rationalisations and self-justifications go on and on. And OCD, by the way, is only one of many H.S. mental illnesses he uses to give himself a free pass for a variety of unpleasant incidents and attitudes; and for what, more generally, some on the feminist left have wittily and aptly labelled his "strip-club misogyny".

All those “out with the guys” episodes, a mainstay of K-ROCK, now seem shame-tinged less, perhaps, because of any deep misogyny and more because they seem tired, forced and out-of-date. What was daring now seems strained and pathetic. What was amusing now seems formulaic and repetitive. He may not have been a one-trick pony, but there may have been a recycling of two or perhaps three tricks: (1) Howard gets lucky — nearly — with a starlet; (2) Howard monsters and obsessively attacks a rival; (3) Howard strikes a non-PC pose on some topic of the day.

Some great radio is rescued from all of this. And the book, in fairness, shows what was rescued from K-ROCK, to be refined and, yes, at times improved on SIRIUS: his gift for serious (what used to be called “in-depth”) interviews; his introspection; his often-buried capacity for self-criticism. No, not those sensationalist K-ROCK confessions, but those more mature reflections we've heard in the last three or four years.

One of the problems of looking back at Stern is that it forces us to look back at ourselves. We tuned in by the million to that festival of naked massage girls, wind-breaking celebrations, and sophomoric humour. We were compliant and, towards the end, uneasily repentent. And yes, #MeToo hurried the process along.

For all those reasons, Howard Stern Comes Again is an uneasy read. He changed radio, and then left it to join what is (for reasons far more profound than the technology) a totally different medium.

What, on the radio landscape, did he leave behind? A few hundred Howard Sterns, for sure, all of them cack-handed, stumbling, uneasy and vaguely ashamed of their own faux outrageousness.

John Reith, early doyen of the emerging BBC, famously said of radio, "only the wind will listen", an observation that became the title of Andrew Boyle’s fine Reith biography.

In Stern's case, we did the listening and the wind did the broadcasting. But both Boyle and Stern reveal — the latter unwittingly — how ephemeral it all is, even at its best. There have always been exceptional moments, when great radio changed history; Stern got us to change the dial, but that's all.

It is a well written book and full of insights into various people and human nature in general.
If you are a Stern fan it is obviously a must read. If you have never heard of Howard Stern or the various interviewees it might still be interesting.
