That’s why werewolves embark on a Howling: a three-year rite of passage in which they’re sent to a group residence to wrestle with their wolfy instincts and assimilate into the Wider World. But Tanner Araya’s Howling is almost over, and he could be called back to his remote pack at any moment. His twenty-first birthday might be his last chance to act on his strongest instinct and finally kiss Chase Denney.
Chase is RA at the Howling residence affectionately dubbed “the Doghouse,” and he takes his job seriously. So seriously that when he realized he was developing feelings for a resident, he forced himself to keep Tanner at a distance. But now that Tanner’s twenty-one, he’s not Chase’s charge any longer. They could be friends or—if Chase is lucky—something more. At least until they both return to their home packs for good, as tradition demands.
It would take a miracle for them to get together—especially when the other Doghouse werewolves insist on “helping.”
Warning: Many Frisbees are harmed in this story, forgiveness is not always easier than permission, and the five-second rule does not apply.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"So when I read the blurb for this, I was naturally excited. You know...paranormal, duh. Lol. And I've really grown fond of E.J.'s characters. So naturally, I figured I would love this one and I do. But what I love even more, is there are some surprise visitors in this book. ALL in this book and that just made my day even better. To see them all and how things have changed and how they've grown, just made my day. ...I hope you all love this as much as I do." --Love Bytes Reviews (five stars)
"There are so many cute characters-misfit weres-at this Howling House, and their talents, while not ideally suited to their own packs, makes them great partners for a pack of their own making. It's not exactly clear if they will all stay together as a found family, but the potential is there for that, as well as future romances in this world. I'm so glad to have gotten this far, and hope to have many more forays into love in this universe." --V's Reads
"There are a few interesting twist and turns in this novel and the idea that all these guys were in this college dormitory-like atmosphere to work out the wolfy kinks before going into the big bad world was a delightfully funny and original premise. ...if you are a fan of this author's other supernatural works, I think you will find great delight in this latest release, Howling on Hold."--Joyfully Jay
"I love that this book put a different spin on werewolf lore. This was a very sweet story about young, unsure, "boys", learning to survive a world that is not their friend. ...So many great personalities in this story. I enjoyed it." --OMG Reads
"A comical supporting cast makes this book a great read. It's an original concept!"--Kinzie Things

Multi-Rainbow Award winner E.J. Russell holds a BA and an MFA in theater, so naturally she spent three decades as a financial manager, database designer, and business intelligence consultant (as one does). She’s married to Curmudgeonly Husband, a man who cares even less about sports than she does. Luckily, C.H. also loves to cook, or all three of their children (Lovely Daughter and Darling Sons A and B) would have survived on nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, and satsuma mandarins (the extent of E.J.’s culinary skill set).
E.J.'s book, The Druid Next Door, was a 2018 RITA® finalist. She lives in rural Oregon, enjoys visits from her wonderful adult children, and indulges in good books, red wine, and the occasional hyperbole.

Tanner and Chase dance around each other for half of the book but deep down, both have huge crushes on the other. As the older were RA, Chase doesn't want to break the rules or cross any boundaries by hitting on Tanner during his 3-year Howling before he turns 21. The night of Tanner's 21st birthday is when everything explodes. All the weres are taken for a night out at the local shifter bar which ends in disaster. Before disaster strikes, I really enjoyed seeing Hamish, Bryce, Mal, and some other familiar faces at the same bar including a certain pale and broody character lurking in the shadows.
Major themes included first-time crushes, well first-time everything, learning to navigate your own future against tradition including pack politics. So much pack politics! Good grief, the pack dynamics were a little off the charts but in a good way because they added to Tanner and Chase's storyline. I did not see that surprise coming from Tanner's pack so it was very nicely written by E.J. Russell. I was trilled to celebrate a wedding of one of my favorite Supernatural Selection couples, Casimir and Rusty, at The Weasel Pit :) I love how E.J. Russell includes cameo appearances in each book as well as a wedding! So much fun and a delight to read! You will definitely laugh yourself stupid with this book because Jordan's antics are great! I loved the other weres and can't wait to read more in the next book:)
Although nominally the first of a series, the author's protagonists from her previous series (Fae Out of Water series and Supernatural Selection) show up and play major helpful roles, to the point of basically solving half the plot for the nominal protagonists. The text is also littered with places that break from the main story in order to make what I can only assume are extended references to previous books. If you have read the previous works and gotten attached to those previous protagonists, I can see how this would be an extra bonus for you. I have not and did not, and so mostly just resented that they were taking up so much time being awesome when really I wanted more of the actual protagonists being awesome instead.
That aside, the book was amusing and interesting, both for the junior-werewolf shenanigans and for what you manage to see of the world. The romance arc was decent, although the book effectively starts midway through when they already love each other. The ending was unexpected, but turns gracefully into a HFN. Would have rated four stars exept for the issue mentioned above.
I liked all the cameos of past characters from previous books in the same universe. Even with former MCs making an appearance, this book felt very much like a standalone. I don’t think it would be necessary to read the others to understand this one, but it did make it a bit more enjoyable to me because I liked them so much the first time.
While the story was unique and attention-grabbing, this wasn’t my favorite couple. The plot line was better than the romantic aspects imo. It wasn’t because I had anything against either character, I liked them a lot as standalone characters. It’s more that I didn’t feel their connection enough. It was talked about more than demonstrated and it felt like at a critical moment they went their separate ways and a whole lot of vital moments were missed.
But despite the slight disappointment I had with the romance, I really enjoyed everything else about the book and I still didn’t *hate* the relationship. I just wish it had been developed as well as the rest of the book
Definitely still a 4.5 star book.
I felt really bad for Tanner. He's harboring a huge crush on Chase and embarrasses himself by kissing him. He's months away from being forced to return to his home pack to become alpha (a job he doesn't want), almost gets run over by his cousin and runs away...all on his 21st birthday. And that's just the beginning. Then the fun really starts.

It had the same humour as all the rest and as many guest appearances from my favourite pair, Mal & Bryce, as well as a catch up with the pairs in the Supernatural Selection series.
Chase and Tanner were a bit younger than the pairs I usually read about, so the steam was medium with fade to black, a slight disappointment.
However, the secondary characters and setting made up for that.

I really don't want to go into any detail about the book, other than to say that this is one of those books where you just need to sit back and enjoy the ride. This is most certainly a romance, but also contains lies and betrayals, as well as friendship, love and humour.
Chase and Tanner are our leading men in this one, their romance is a slow burn, with some complications, but it does open up the possibility of more straightforward romances in future stories.
I also enjoyed the inclusion of characters from previous books, especially those from The Supernatural Selection series. A good book to set up what I hope is going to be a new series from Ms Russell, can't wait for Jordan's story.

The night of his 21st, things come to a head. Tanner and Chase are separated, and it looks pretty grim for the romance that never got started. Have no fear, they do reunite and fight against malevolent forces – with the help of many of the characters from the author’s Fae out of Water series – including Mal, Alan, and Hamish the kangaroo shifter. Throw in a vampire, a bear shifter and…well, you get the picture. An epic battle. And, of course, the other members of the dog house are along for the ride of chaos and mayhem.
I truly enjoyed this book. As much as I rooted for Tanner and Chase, Jordan stole the show. I’m waiting for him to get his own book. I can’t wait to see who can tame and at the same time nurture that enthusiasm.
Kudos to Greg Boudreaux who did a lovely job narrating the book. Can’t wait for the next one.
