Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camara lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also saturate colors and increase contrast. Polarizers come in two variations but have the same effect. Linear polarizers work with older camera meters; Circurlar polarizers are designed for today's newer split-beam metering systems used in auto focus cameras. Check your camera's manual. Hardened Glass: Hardened optical glass that has 4 times the breaking strength in ANSI standardized testing (ANSI Z80.3 : 2001) where a steel balls of varying size and weight were dropped from a height of 50 inches onto the glass. High Transparency Polarizing Film; The polarizing film is the same as that used in the latest high definition LCD TV screens. It has 25% higher light transmission than standard polarizing film used in current photographic filters. Hardened 8 Layer Waterproof Multi-Coating That is Scratch & Stain Resistant: Newly developed industry leading 8-layer multi-coating yields an average light transmission rate of 99.35% between 400 and 700nm (visible spectrum).
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
1. It can get stuck on the lens. Be careful not to screw it on too tight as it tends to stick to the lens. A filter wrench or rubber band may be used to remove it should you tighten it too much. I try not to tighten it when I attach it to my lens. An Internet search will confirm that people other than I have had this problem.
2. It can fall apart. The two metal rings split apart and the brass colored spring wire that holds them together falls on the ground. This happened to me when I was trying to remove it with a rubber band "wrench" when the filter became stuck to the lens. The glass hit the ground and I now have a very tiny nick in it. As others reported here on this problem you can search the Internet to find instructions for putting it back together. It will require cleaning as filter rotating lubricant gets all over the glass. It took nearly half an hour of trial and error to put things back together.
The polarizer is VERY thin - it is SO thin that I its a little difficult for my fat fingers to thread it to my lens. But that's one of the reasons its a good filter, because its so thin.
Polarizer rotates perfectly - very easy, exceptionally smooth. And absolutely no complaint about image quality. As the title says, nice optic.
I needed a polarizing filter, this fit the bill. The quality is excellent! The images that I captured when using this filter were exactly what I expected. No surprises.
Well worth the money! I would, and did, buy Hoya filters again!
After owning the filter for only 3 weeks it completely fell apart when I tried removing it from my lens for cleaning (I was applying very gentle force). The two black metal rings split away from each other and the inner gold coloured C-ring (which allows the two black rings to rotate) came loose. An internet search confirmed that many other customers of Hoya cir-pl filters have had the same issue. Luckily (and after 30 minutes of trying) I managed to piece the filter back together again and it seems to be working fine, but it is something to be wary of. Would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for this defect.

However this is a beauty of a polariser and as it states it let's in more light, which it does very well indeed. Been shooting now for a month with this filter and I can honestly say its the best I've ever used, can be a bit tight once it's on but let's face it you don't want to unintentionally unscrew it when you're out and about.
5tars all round
One really odd thing though - for years the way to prove a polarising filer or glasses was doing its job was to cross then at 90 degrees - if they are polar, they go black. These don't do this - they darken a little, but not that much. Does anyone know why?
Expensive of course.
One very minor niggle not worth losing a star. The case is enormous! Looks like Hoya use one case for all the filters from 72mm so it sits in the middle of a case 100mm diameter that takes up more space than it should and is difficult to squeeze into my gadget bag side pockets.
Changed to five years as it still appears strong after many use!
However sometimes you see "rainbow" colors when you shoot some uncoated glass or acrylic surfaces, while with other thicker polarisers you don't.
Vetro antiriflesso e resistente a urti, sporco, acqua.. colori e contrasto ottimi! Consigliatissimo
