I also like (and need) WiFi calling. True I wouldn't need it if I had Verizon but then again, this phone doesn't work on Verizon. I got it to run on T-Mobile and T-Mobile has spotty coverage where I live. When your coverage isn't the best WiFi calling adds an option. All modern flagship phones have WiFi calling. Samsung's S series and Note series. All apple phones. The Nexus and Pixel lines. Not to mention all carrier branded phones. So I was more than a bit surprised when I found out my newly purchased Huawei's phone - that can only run on AT&T and T-Mobile - doesn't support WiFi calling on either network. Seriously? Yes, I should have checked before buying it. But I also didn't check to see if the phone could send text messages. I just assumed (wrongly) that a flagship phone from 2017 would have all the modern stuff. But nope. This was the ultimate deal breaker for me and why I sent the phone packing back to Amazon. Huawei's response (below) was to add Skype?! Seriously? How about you guys fix your phones? But pointing that out that flaw seems to have riled up the Huawei supporters. Oh well...
I really wanted to love this phone and there are a ton of amazing features I did love. But in the end, this phone just wasn't for me. Maybe it's for you.
Anyway here's my original review. Enjoy (or more likely NOT enjoy). Have a good one either way.
The good: Amazing camera. Fantastic battery. Very good size and slim bezel.
The bad: Everything else.
The screen is decent not the higher resolution you would hope to see in a modern phone.
The interface is some messed up version of Android called EMUI (why!?!). Sure you can change out the launcher but you aren't going to get any Google Now Cards. No full device encryption either - guess the Chinese government isn't keen on encryption.
And finally no WiFi calling in North America.
That last one was the deal breaker. I don't have good enough T-Mobile coverage and I depend on WiFi calling at home.
Update Feb 27/2017: T-Mobile is now beta testing "DIGITS". It's similar in many ways to WiFi calling and might actually overcome my biggest issue with this phone. I'm in the Digits beta and if it works out I'll update my review.
After spending the weekend with the phone I am still very happy with my purchase.
The battery life is great compared to my old phone. I play Clash Royale and check it frequently for texting and social media and snapchat and I can easily get through the day without having to charge it. There is very little drain while the phone is idle also, which is nice. As long as you don't leave a ton of apps open constantly. They have a function that alerts you to background processes using up heavy battery, but it can get a little frustrating with Facebook and Spotify. Those two apps will constantly restart themselves in the background to refresh info, so I'd say once every hour or so I get a warning alerting me to close background apps that aren't physically running on the phone. The app itself is killed there is just a process running. Would be nice to be able to permanently lock the Facebook app from reopening itself, but I don't so much blame the phone for that as I do Facebook developers.
Performance is still great. With past phones they tend to heat up when using games, even right out of the box, but the Mate can handle everything I threw at it with no lag. I tested Clash Royale, the new Roller Coaster Tycoon port, and Non-stop Knight. No problems across the board.
I noticed the notifications do not appear on your lock screen by default, like not even an icon saying you have a notification. You have to go into each app in the settings individually and select which appear on the lock screen. Otherwise without unlocking it you have no way of knowing you have a message besides the LED. So it can be fixed you just have to take the time to do it. Speaking of unlocking the phone the fingerprint reader is phenomenal. I've never used a backside reader before so I figured it would be weird getting used to, but this fingerprint reader is so quick it to me no time at all to adjust. You don't have to click to turn the screen on at all you just tap your finger on the reader quick with the screen completely black and it will unlock to your home screen instantly. Also there is feature that you can swipe on the reader to scroll through pictures or to bring down the settings screen which I think is pretty cool. Finally you can double click the volume down button to instantly take a picture from the lock screen. Again this happens almost immediately, it's one of my favorite features so far.
I changed my rating to 5 stars for now because I do love the time I've spent with the phone. I'll probably update again after about a month, and definitely after they push the Alexa update that is supposed to be coming. Until then, enjoy if you decide to buy! It's a great deal!
After receving the phone, im impressed with its speed and performance, its got a great battery life as well, and the fingerprint sensor/unlock is very fast compared to other phones(even googles nexus6p made by huawei), one critical bug I have not been able to solve, is music apps like pandora will either be killed or skip songs when the screen locks, especially when the app is in the background and you have something else open, ive checked all the autokill settings and have no solution, however if your careful you can have music running while the screen is locked, but it is quite annoying to deal with
