Top Customer Reviews
Business Travel to Taiwan; Mobile Hotspot -- for on-the-go and hotel-use.
Internet has always been my primary concern when traveling abroad. I am an infrequent traveler. Initial research suggested purchasing a Prepaid Sim Card from Chunghwa Telecom at the Airport was the best deal. This particular deal is an Airport Exclusive so make sure to get it there--they have 3/5/7/10/15/30 day unlimited data sim cards.
Since this business trip was short notice and not planned, I did not research much other than on Amazon for the highest rated reviews and same-day shipping. There were a few Huawei units--I chose this particular one because it had a heftier battery that would last me throughout the day. I wanted it to be my mobile hotspot and have connectivity wherever I went.
This product is a game changer. Not knowing if this device would function properly, I purchased three 30 Day Unlimited Data Sim Cards from Chunghwa Telecom. But I only needed one. I didn't bother customizing the SSID or Password and kept all defaults on the device. I just put the Prepaid Sim in the device and I was good to go after one power cycle.
In Taiwan, Chunghwa Telecom is no slouch. As referenced in the picture, I got 22.68 Mbps down and 14.33 Mbps up. The Unlimited Data is also truly unlimited as well. I averaged 5.3 GB a day of constant internet usage, according to the usage meter on the Huawei E5770s-320.
When traveling during the day, I put the Huawei E5770s-320 in my backpack and it sustains all my devices easily throughout the day with constant non-stop usage. It is so good and seamless in its performance I often think my phones are simply on a data plan and forget they are on wifi. The battery life is superb; for example, after 6 hours of consistent usage, my battery was 71%.
When at my hotel, I could be 30 feet away and still get a good signal, so if I'm just stopping in for a quick break before leaving I can just leave the device in my backpack and get to work.
Having consistent connectivity is such a relief--so much so that even for an infrequent traveler as myself, I would consider this a game changer. Time will tell with other Countries--maybe other Countries aren't so generous with their unlimited Data Plans and Offerings, but at least for Taiwan, the Chunghwa Telecom Prepaid Card coupled with the Huawei E5770s-320: it is a spectacular duo.
Trip is over. Handled 5 simultaneous devices with no sweat. Streamed Netflix from FireTV Stick with no issues. Attached updated usage screenshot from the Huawei Hilink iOS App. Used 83.3GB in a little less than 2 weeks.
T-Mobile in the U.S.--unfortunately, there is no LTE, only 3G--otherwise known as "4G HSPA+" in the United States. Speedtest.net results were 7.3 Mbps down and 0.67 Mbps up. Robust enough for any productivity task and even YouTube streaming.
***Update: Took this to Iceland. Placed a Siminn data card and it connected right away. At full 4g signal, I was getting 80mbps down and 50 mbps up. Went on an 8 hour trip around the Golden Circle with 4 connected users. Used 3gb of data and was at 53% battery remaining.
I've not used its built in battery pack to charge anything, but I can see how that might come in handy. What I do find is that it's very handy the device itself will go for many hours (at least 10 or more, as far as I can tell) without needing to be plugged in. It makes it just as portable as my phone, if not more so.
> HiLink App <
I highly recommend installing the Huawei HiLink app onto your smartphone. It provides a handy way to control the modem without having to use a clunky web interface.
> ISSUES <
The main issue I have with this device is that Huawei provided no way to disable the WiFi on it. I specifically bought a modem with an Ethernet port so that I would not have to have WiFi broadcasting near me. I don't like the radiation. But, even for those who don't care about WiFi radiation. forcing the WiFi to be on drains the battery. It supposably disables the WiFi when it has not been used for some time, but so far I've not seen it go off. Any time I scan for a WiFi network with my phone it finds the Huawei, so obviously it's still broadcasting.
I communicated with Huawei about this issue, and suggested they make a minor change to the firmware/web interface to allow for disabling the WiFi. I got the impression they were not interested in implementing a battery saving feature such as that. Oh well.
> ALTERNATIVES <
Huawei has quite a line up of functionally similar devices. If you want to save some money, and don't require an Ethernet port, you might find the Huawei E5377s-32 does the trick just fine. It's a new model, and looks sleeker (if that matters to you). Currently it'll save you around $50.
Or, if you have plenty of $ to throw at such a device, the Huawei E5786s-32 300 Mbps 4G LTE & 43.2 Mpbs 3G Mobile WiFi is a newer and somewhat fancier option. It also allows for Ethernet (if you need it) via a special adapter cable.
> CONCLUSION <
If you don't need the Ethernet connection, and the battery pack, then I'd say it may be worth going for a cheaper option without the Ethernet.
