The reviews do not lie. This phone is fast! The Kirin 950 makes short work of any task you throw at it. It's a Chinese product, so keep in mind it's designed for the needs of that market. Meaning, no app drawer and a very derivative, iOS-like user experience. Of course, you are interested in a device that is not available in the US, so you already know this, and this is Android, so you already have Nova Launcher ready to slap on. If you stick with EMUI, you have six themes to choose from out of the box and no theme store, but if you search you will find hundreds of themes online from the emui.huawei website, just use Google translate. The device has almost no bezels, however you will notice black bars all around the edges of the display panel. I dislike this very much and in my opinion it means you should only buy the Space Grey option as it blends in very discreetly and annoys you less. There was an OTA update mid January which improved the camera software, which is nice because it already has great camera software. Very quick, snappy photos. Excellent image quality and a ridiculously awesome Pro mode for photography nerds. The best part of this phone, cherry on top, is that it just doesn't die. This thing lasts for DAYS. I am writing this review with 37% battery left and the last time I charged it was the day before yesterday. It cannot be overstated, there is something to be said about the security and confidence, the feeling of knowing you are good to go all day, every day, no matter what and you don't have to go looking for power outlets. This to me is priceless.Read more ›
Although this is a 1080p screen not a 2k resolution, I cannot really tell the difference between the vibrant screen and the the top of line screen. For example, when comparing it to the S7 edge screen, which is the best at the moment, there is only a minor difference which can only be seen if put side to side. The Mate 8 is really nice compared to those
Which brings me to my next point, which is the battery life. Because this screen is only 1080p it doesn't drain the battery as much, and as a result the battery life on this thing is amazing. I never had an Android device give me this much battery life. I am averaging about 6 hours screen on time. I'm a heavy user as well. Compare this to where I usually average around 3.5 hours of screen on time with the S7 edge and the note 5, which have pretty decent battery life as well. If one is not a heavy user then you may be able to get few days without charging. For this reason alone I would recommend the phone for people who are always away from an outlet and need long battery life.
Another really good thing about the Mate 8 is the silky smooth and quick responsiveness of the OS. I have used the Nexus 6p and the S7 edge and this phone is better in terms of lack of lag and responsiveness. I am surprised how quick this phone is and I'm really liking it.Read more ›
It's considerably better than the mate 7. Much more responsive, zero lag, and better build quality. The redesigned edges make it fit very comfortably in your hand, and the new print sensor is not only the fastest and most accurate on the market, but is very well placed and convenient (much like the nexus 6p).
The speaker is very nice. Not as loud as some, but the size, mixed with the metal body if the phone, has the speaker deliver some nice bass and crisp treble.
The new version of software gives more features than the previous mate 7 and S models, and is fairly smoothed out. It's worth mentioning that the stock launcher is extremely close to Apple's ios, so if you don't like iPhone, you'll end up downloading a 3rd party launcher.
Camera is about average for flagship devices. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. (It's about even in quality with the iPhone 6/6s).
Again, I would highly recommend this for anyone who needs extreme battery life and the best performance, as the battery is huge and it is currently the most powerful phone on the market, at least until Samsung releases its upcoming exynos processor.
