I was previously using HUAWEI MATE 20 PRO. An absolute beauty. Even at the end of second year, the performance of the phone was as day 1. It was pretty slim too and I don't like covers.
Coming to Huawei P40 pro, the phone looks awesome. I got a blue color international version of the phone. The phone is slightly thicker than the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
UI is as clean as ever, maybe too much clean without GOOGLE MOBILE SERVICES.
Most functions in the phone aren't affected. Camera is great, even took a moon photo and it was lovely. EMUI 11 has several improvements over EMUI 10. Battery lasts forever.
But I must say many Indian apps and some international apps heavily depend on GMS and don't function at all. Best way to find out is to go to notifications settings on your phone and see if you have Google play services notification setting under each app. Those are the apps that will not work without GMS. Some apps like HDFC MOBILE BANKING, KOTAK MAHINDRA MOBILE BANKING, ICICI MOBILE BANKING, SWIGGY, ZOMATO etc will work but may have 1 or 2 functions not running properly. For example you won't be able to track the delivery guy on SWIGGY or zomato as the maps are from Google. So you get the idea. I'm not sure what some apps need GMS for at all, they seem to function fine without GMS but keep showing that error message that GMS is missing. Forget using ola or Uber app completely. You might be able to use Uber Web version and ola lite if you're lucky. No Google maps for sure. But Web version of maps will work just fine if you create a shortcut and add to your home screen. The list goes on. Whilst the specs and hardware are amazing, without GMS this isn't for everyone and the common user will struggle.
The device also only has WIDEVINE L3 certification which means videos on Netflix and amazon prime cannot PLAY or download in HD.
The only frustration is , a lot local apps., such as My 7-11 (lock petrol price) , NAB bank, CommSec stock trading , Cellopark (parking) ... are only available on Apple and Google stores, even if I could extract the apk file from an existing installation and move/install them, they won't work when detecting there is no Google framework installed. Huawei has developed a "Quick App Centre" that hosts some "Quick Apps" essentially just a mobile version of website page from the app provider - I got some quick apps from there such as Uber and Domain and the experience is very close to the native Android app.
Speaking of the hardware and the EMUI OS by itself, it's simply brilliant and one of the best phones out there.
