Hubble: Window on the Universe Hardcover – November 6, 2014

4.6 out of 5 stars 96 ratings

A fully updated pictorial retrospective of the Hubble Space Telescope.

For 20 years the Hubble Space Telescope has been hurtling around our planet at 17,500 mph sending spectacularly sharp images of the universe back to Earth, but after two decades and 570,000 photographs, NASA is preparing to wind down this extraordinarily successful mission.
This fully revised and updated edition of Hubble: Window on the Universe (Legacy Edition) showcases the very latest and clearest images of galaxies, nebulae, quasars, exploding stars and stellar nurseries. More than 200 remarkable cosmic images reveal the inner workings of the solar system, the expansion of the Universe, the birth and death of stars, the formation of planetary nebulae, the dynamics of galaxies and the mysterious force known as 'dark energy'.

Hubble is a celebration of this large and versatile telescope's astonishing scientific and technical achievements. Featuring the history of the project from its origins and launch in 1990, the discovery and emergency repair of a defective mirror, the impact of subsequent servicing missions and finally, its extraordinary legacy this stunning giant volume will take you on a journey through the universe via 200 glorious full-colour images.

This is a huge book, the biggest I have ever seen. I thought I was buying a Hubble picture book (for a bargain price), but as I dip into it I am pleasantly surprised. It's not a quicky Hubble book, but a well laid out, well written book combining beautiful Hubble images with information about the images and the Hubble telescope. It's not 100% Hubble images. In some cases Hubble images have been combined with those of the (infrared) Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory to give a very wide spectrum image. In the planetary section Hubble images are supplemented with close up images from various space probes.

The text by Giles Sparrow is extensive and informed, both astronomically and about the telescope. Attention to detail is shown by a little code next to the Hubble images indicating which version of the telescope took the image. The telescope has been rebuilt in space five times over its long lifetime.

Most of the images in this very large book (many covering two pages) are nicely printed and breathtaking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great

I bought this book even though I speak German but this book was cheaper in English and I wanted the pictures more than the text explanations, this book is nothing like I ever saw before about the universe. The fascinating photos are amazing and I love just looking into this book, it makes you feel so small looking at these miracles out there and the theory that we are not alone out there is more than just thinkable for me to be honest. Any way the photos are just breathtaking, thanks for making me feel like a child looking at the Christmas tree when I see these pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive and informative

Very nice book with amazing pictures and interesting information both about the pictures and about the background history of the ongoing project and the thrilling servicing missions.

Each HST picture is color coded with a number referring to the the Servicing Mission phase thus allowing to see the effect that they had on the quality of the pictures.

Pay attention to the book's dimensions on the product information section. It may seem too big, but I'm sure that overall the pictures benefit from the size, as the superb detail level on many of them could not have been reached with standard page size.

I warmly recommend for any casual reader like me who's interested in astronomy or science in general.
