Starting with the cons:
- Small quad which makes it difficult to see at a far distance
- Orientation becomes difficult at a distance, again due to size
- Somewhat affected by wind (though not as much as one would expect)
- Flight time is only 7 minutes max.
- Charge time is roughly 40-60 minutes.
- Camera is not HD for this particular model.
- Heavy in comparison to other quads.
- Propeller guard breaks easily if quad falls from more than 20 feet. (But a replacement is available online)
- Propellers become loose if you crash a bit (but a spare set comes in the box)
Now the pros:
+ Quad can take a beating. I lost control in some strong winds and saw this fall over 50 feet and there is not a single scratch on the quad. I did lose one propeller but after falling over 50 feet that was no big problem.
+ Incredibly easy to control. Even without some of the more advanced features like GPS positioning (who would have that on a quadcopter this size?) The copter will remain very level with minor adjustments to keep it flying.
+ The remote is pretty good quality. This makes flying the X4 a breeze. Trim is easily adjusted, and best of all, the remote works on the ProtoX.
+ Although the video quality is not HD, it takes some pretty good video. For a cheap little flier, it is nice to watch the videos if you climb pretty high or do some nice acrobatic flying.
+ Easy repairs. There are plenty of replacement parts to be found online on Amazon if anything should ever happen to the copter.
+ Easy battery purchase. I've purchased a second battery and allows me to fly twice as long, I just need to come back and swap out the batteries and continue flying. You can buy as many batteries as you feel you'll need because they're available.
+ Great for indoor or outdoor flying in moderate wind conditions.
+ Acrobatic mode is a blast as long as you climb high enough to throttle it up and gain altitude again.
+ Well packaged with instructions that are legible (trust me, that is rare)
Overall, I recommend this product since it is a blast to use indoor and outdoors. Guaranteed you'll have so much fun and it will last since the build quality is apparent the moment you take this out of the box.
Having flown micro helicopters, coaxial helis and my AR Drone this came to me pretty quickly and I was astounded by the small size as it fits on the palm of the hand but don't let that fool you as to its abilities! This Quad is extremely sensitive to input so if you are a first timer to this quad set the sensitivity all the way down as it will be much easier to master. The quad has a tendency to drift when using quick hard inputs but once you figure out the recovery move its pretty easy to overcome.
The LEDs are very intuitive with Blue as the front and red as the back, when the quad is flying towards you there are two blue eyes on the body and when the battery starts to run low the LEDs will give ample warning by blinking to give you enough time to safely set down, The propellers are also color coded white for front and black for back which helps during daytime flights. I would have liked to see the blue eyes ditched for a couple white LEDs for night flying.
The built in video recorder is a nice ad-on and impressive considering the price point. Do not expect high quality HD recording but the video is a full 720x480 at 24fps SD and the pinhole lens gets the job done while giving passable quality (Note, the video is by far better than the front video camera on the V1.0 AR Drone). The camera needs ample light to record a decent image so low indoor lighting and night time recording will result in useless muddy video. To record video you have to press a small button on the side of the unit and look inside for a red blinking LED which is hard to see, I would like to see this LED moved so it can be seen clearly on the body. To save the recording you have to press the button again so the red light goes off, then it is safe to power off the quad and the video can be viewed by opening the .avi file. A full flight 6:30 video results in a 150-200mb file.
Flight time is based on how it is flown but 4-7 minutes can be expected with the included battery. Charging is done via USB dongle charger but requires a USB power brick or port on computer or car etc. An few extra batteries is recommended if you do not wish to wait 30 minutes between flights. My unit came with a set of replacement blades, a removal tool and an indoor blade guard taped to the bottom side of the white plastic. You will need a micro SDHD card to record video and I have tested with a 16GB card and it records without issues so far. I look forward to mastering this little beast and would highly recommend to anybody who wants to start off or just wants an indoor flyer for those rainy days or when they need a quick flight fix!
UPDATE: I've had this Micro Quadcopter for a week now and have gone through about 15 battery cycles. I have managed a few fights up to and beyond 250' and have started to master some quick pass and fast turns. Flying in the wind has its challenges and during a small breeze the quad can lose its ability to fly against the wind when the sensitivity is set low so keep this in mind when learning to fly. As can be seen in the video the quad will rock around when in a quick descent as it tries to stabilize itself and this rocking can put the copter into an unrecoverable fall if it is falling fast enough. Others have also noted that there is no sound on this copter, well there is to an extent. If the audio is boosted in a movie player you can hear the buzzing of the motors and thumps as the copter lands or hits objects this can be useful to hear how much stick is being applied to the copter at different types of flight. I would buy this quad copter again in a heartbeat!
