Starting with the cons:
- Small quad which makes it difficult to see at a far distance
- Orientation becomes difficult at a distance, again due to size
- Somewhat affected by wind (though not as much as one would expect)
- Flight time is only 7 minutes max.
- Charge time is roughly 40-60 minutes.
- Camera is not HD for this particular model.
- Heavy in comparison to other quads.
- Propeller guard breaks easily if quad falls from more than 20 feet. (But a replacement is available online)
- Propellers become loose if you crash a bit (but a spare set comes in the box)
Now the pros:
+ Quad can take a beating. I lost control in some strong winds and saw this fall over 50 feet and there is not a single scratch on the quad. I did lose one propeller but after falling over 50 feet that was no big problem.
+ Incredibly easy to control. Even without some of the more advanced features like GPS positioning (who would have that on a quadcopter this size?) The copter will remain very level with minor adjustments to keep it flying.
+ The remote is pretty good quality. This makes flying the X4 a breeze. Trim is easily adjusted, and best of all, the remote works on the ProtoX.
+ Although the video quality is not HD, it takes some pretty good video. For a cheap little flier, it is nice to watch the videos if you climb pretty high or do some nice acrobatic flying.
+ Easy repairs. There are plenty of replacement parts to be found online on Amazon if anything should ever happen to the copter.
+ Easy battery purchase. I've purchased a second battery and allows me to fly twice as long, I just need to come back and swap out the batteries and continue flying. You can buy as many batteries as you feel you'll need because they're available.
+ Great for indoor or outdoor flying in moderate wind conditions.
+ Acrobatic mode is a blast as long as you climb high enough to throttle it up and gain altitude again.
+ Well packaged with instructions that are legible (trust me, that is rare)
Overall, I recommend this product since it is a blast to use indoor and outdoors. Guaranteed you'll have so much fun and it will last since the build quality is apparent the moment you take this out of the box.
But you should be warned that they will like it a lot. And they will practice with it a lot. It's a small little thing but it makes a very loud buzzing noise which will haunt you around your house for weeks. It will be crashed into everything you own with cackles of glee. One of your cats will be terrified, one will want to eat it.
Moral of the story: great toy. But consider buying it for someone who lives in a different house than you.
Actual flight time per charge is around 7 to 8 minutes. Note, this is actual "in air" time. A flying session, using one battery, can easily last 15 minutes or more depending on how many times you land and stop the props.
If you have not flown a remote control aircraft before, be prepared to spend quite a bit of time learning how to fly this thing. Neither my wife or I had flown RC craft before and we still need a lot more practice before we consider ourselves as competent fliers. Fortunately the H107C is a very durable little bugger and can take a lot of abuse.
On both our units we immediately installed the included prop protector and continue to always fly with the prop protector installed. However, the prop protector is very flexible. In a crash it doesn't so much protect the props as it protects whatever you run into. Perhaps it is better to think of the prop protector more as a "furniture/wall" protector when flying indoors.
Often, after a crash, one or more props may go flying off its motor spindle. When a prop goes flying off, it can do so in any direction and it may fly a considerable distance. If you don't have glasses you may wish to consider wearing safety goggles if you plan to be relatively close to the unit during hard landings and crashes. These props are pretty small too. Looking for a black or green prop (in a grassy field or lawn) can be very difficult. In the future I plan to only purchase red/white props as they are much easier to spot.
Also, after each crash, take a few moments to inspect the unit. I find, on my unit, that the prop protector tends to creep up towards the blades sometimes causing a bit of friction preventing one or more of the blades from spinning well. It only takes a second or two to adjust this and you're off flying again.
When flying outdoors, the video camera does quite well. Every time you start/stop the video recording feature, it creates a new video file on your memory card so you can have multiple videos saved on a single card. The two H107C units I've purchased are not the HD models (which are typically priced $25 more). For my purposes, I find the standard video quality quite adequate. However, if shooting videos is one of the main reasons you are considering a quadcopter you may wish to spend a little extra for the higher resolution camera.
The controller is top-notch and allows you to customize the sensitivity of the control sticks for each function. I've not flown my quadcopter very far away but believe that the range coverage provided will be more than adequate for a quadcopter of this size.
There are several YouTube videos and other sources of information on the internet covering how to fly and improve your Hubsan X4. If you're new to quadcopters, I highly recommend spending some time learning all you can before you do much flying. I've implemented a couple of simple mods which have made it easier for me to plug in and change batteries on my unit.
I give this unit 4 stars instead of 5 because, both our X4 units have a bit of an irritating squeal when operating. This is probably a by product of the small electric motors used. Otherwise I have no complaints. A quality product--especially considering all that you get for the price.
I do not believe you will find a better quadcopter for under $100. This is a great buy! I know I will be getting many hours of fun out of my unit.
